Jollygoodfellow Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Nothing to do with low wages or living in but all to do with faulty wiring in my opinion. :( Seven die in Philippine store fire Davao - Seven store employees were killed in the southern Philippines when a paint shop burned down while they were sleeping inside, the provincial police chief said on Friday. The fatalities - three men and four women - died when the Palomares Paint Store in the rural town of Manay in Mindanao island caught fire late on Thursday, said Senior Superintendent Jose Carumba. "The victims were stay-in storekeepers and helpers. All of them were burned beyond recognition when found," he said. The bodies were found still in their beds, indicating the fire spread quickly due to the paint and other flammable materials in the store, Carumba added. Police are eyeing faulty wiring as the cause of the fire, he added. It is common in the Philippines for people with low-paying jobs to "stay-in" or sleep in their place of work. This has led to tragedies including a fire in a department store in the southern Philippines in May 2012, which killed 17 employees sleeping inside. http://www.news24.com/World/News/7-die-in-Philippine-store-fire-20131206
Americano Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 I agree with you Bossman. I have seen a lot of faulty wiring in the Philippines and even extension cords that are not high enough quality for 220V. The quality of extensions cords in the USA are twice as good but we only use 120V there. And, its very common to see power cable wires wrapped together by hand and with electrical tape wrapped around the ends.
Call me bubba Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 I have seen a lot of faulty wiring in the Philippines and even extension cords that are not high enough quality for 220V. thats true but if 1 has the TIME and EFFORT good cords can be found. ACE? TRUE VALUE? about the workmanship. 1. if you are having it done in 1's house, educate (if practical) of how it "should" be done . yet in a way that doesnt "OFFEND" the worker , yes old dogs can learn new tricks if $ is an incentive . 2. of what i have learned and inquired over the years that these workers , rather "Stay-in" than commute as the costs are "out of control" , the live-in wage for some of these wotkers is under 300p a day, .then deduction for room.etc etc. 3, had this been an ANGLO expat who operated this, I am sure ALL hell wpuld break out on him/her yet this type of senseless deaths have occurred in the past and will continue UNTIL the rules/laws are Fully ENFORCED or when the people will rise to remove such hindrances that retards the development of a better society
Medic Mike Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 I often worry about the wiring I see in my travels in Cebu. In particular in some of these guest houses that we visit to pick patients up from. A lot of these places look like death traps in regards to wiring. I am amazed we don't have more fires and electricutions.
Tukaram (Tim) Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Faulty wiring in the PI's? Never! Man, this is the scariest wiring I have ever seen. And they have never heard of wire nuts, matter of fact uncle (a professional "electrician") says twisting and tape is better. We have zero breakers in the house. The wires come in to a knife switch and daisy chain around the house. Safety first :tiphat:
