Mike S Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 Been meaning to ask this for sometime now but keep forgetting (old age you know) ... I've noticed that although there are handicap parking slots no one seems to care where they park .... I've seen people with apparently no right to park there but they do anyway .... we saw 3 young guys hope out of a big SUV one of which removed the parking cone in front of the slot before pulling the car in .... I guess they should be thankful he didn't just drive right over it .... :hystery: So what is the law here ... do they have handicap stickers on the cars or is it like in Florida where you are issued a card which the owner must display from the rear view mirror when being used .... they used to issue handicap parking license plates but found out it was better to issue the card as the card belongs to the person and not to the car .... or do they not issue anything at all for handicap persons .... I know it is hard to tell if some people are in need of a handicap parking spot as people with some health problems are not visible on the out side .... but when you see some sexy young thing come bouncing out of her or his car you kinda get the feeling they don't need to be parking there .... JMHO :cheersty:

Jake Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 It's the law of the jungle, starting with: DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM? Don't bother me, because my chit don't stink.
JJReyes Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 Handicapped parking privileges are respected elsewhere because the laws are enforced and the fines are hefty. There is also this thing called, "Tow Away" which does not exist in the Philippines.
Steve & Myrlita Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 My understanding is that those who drive newer pickups or SUVs are mostly owned by rich and very well connected people who the laws do not apply to and can make life a living hell for foreigners if they wanted to and was advised to let them do as they please even if illegal and you're in the right. In the end, they will win and you will lose even with deportation. When driving, I give them a wide berth. Whem Myrlita asks me why I didn't just go? I told her a Filipino can do that. Foreigners will never get away with it. Last year, I made a left turn behind 3 others. Cop stopped me and said no left turn. I said 3 before me did. He said you foreigner. Corruption at it's best. But it's more pun in da Philippines.
Forum Support scott h Posted December 9, 2013 Forum Support Posted December 9, 2013 Come on now! In a country where if you have a relative in the medical profession, you get a Nurse or Doctor placard. Where the ambulances and police cars drive with emergency lights on all the time. Where a U turn is made if there is the slightest break in traffic, no matter where in the street they are. Or cars double park, turn on the flashers and sit there. Or Jeepnys stop in traffic let off passangers and then just sit and wait for fares. My brother in law calls it "Democracy in Action!" Back in the States we called it "If it feels good, DO IT." But then again I can't count the number of times back in the States I would see a car park in the handicap space and a healthy teenager would hop out and RUN inside. Not a lot of difference really
JJReyes Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Last year, I made a left turn behind 3 others. Cop stopped me and said no left turn. I said 3 before me did. He said you foreigner. Corruption at it's best. But it's more pun in da Philippines. I had a good laugh on this one. It defies Western logic, but makes perfect sense if you are a Filipino. My sister made an illegal u-turn on the corner of Ayala and Makati during the height of the afternoon traffic. Makati police officers came running and bailed her out by stopping cross traffic. They saluted as we left. My son's jaw dropped. I explained to him later that the police assumed she must be someone important to be so reckless as to make an illegal u-turn. Again, it makes perfect sense if you are a Filipino. Another thing that amazed him were security guards with shotguns standing by the door of McDonald and Starbucks. Their main function was to serve as doormen and to refold the newspapers after reading them at Starbucks.
Mike S Posted December 9, 2013 Author Posted December 9, 2013 Heres a bit about the law but does not answer your question I think. http://www.senate.gov.ph/lisdata/91817724!.pdf Thank you sir ... so they do have a law and it can be enforced .... BUT how do they determine if you are handicapped or not with out some means to show them you are .... I wonder if just walking with a cane would work ... I'm sure someone in a wheel chair would qualify .... but what about those with a heart condition .... maybe a note from your doctor or mum (sic) would be good enough .... very strange that they would make a law but not know if it is being enforced or not as there is no way to prove you are or you are not handicapped ..... interesting .... :cheersty:
