robert k Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Dave, I would think that 15 piso on a 100 piso bill would be a decent tip.
alsuave Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I strongly believe that tipping is a foolish practice and should be abolished altogether. 1. Tips have very little correlation with the quality of the service. Most people simply tip a standard amount out of habit. So why would a waiter provide better service when he knows he will be tipped the standard amount anyway? 2. Tipping is discriminatory. A recent study by Cornell University found that black service providers, on average, earn less on tips than white service providers. 3. Tipping is unfair because attractive serving staff get better tips than unattractive serving staff. 4. There was another study I read (I have to look for it. I can't remember where I read it but I'll post a link when I find it) that correlates tipping with corruption. Basically, countries where tipping is prevalent are more corrupt than countries where tipping is not practiced. Tipping is such an awkward practice and I would rather just pay more for the bill.
earthdome Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) I agree that tipping being required because the wait staff make a lower salary and depend on tips is not a good practice. I tip at restaurants in the US because I know the wait staff is dependent on tips as part of their salary. In the philippines I generally don't tip but there are some cases where I will tip, usually when I know I will be a repeat customer and want to ensure good service in the future. For example, the taxi drivers that I use over and over since they base themselves in my neighborhood or a good restaurant I frequent. Remember that the philippines doesn't have a tipping culture but they do have a gift culture. Getting to know the security guards for your building and perhaps giving them a small gift can be helpful in the future. Kind of paying it forward. Tukaram (Tim) Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Just saw this on tipping: http://www.theloop.ca/opinion/money/article/-/a/3089487/OpEd-Tipping-is-unfair-to-diners-and-wait-staff-alike From the article It’s ridiculous to force us to pay to have servers bring the food and drink we are already paying for. That’s like requiring grocery shoppers to throw a few bills the cashier’s way for ringing up their purchases. The labour is part of the deal. Some grocers in the US now require you to bring your own bags, and some no longer have bag boys. I won't shop at them... but then again I refuse to to the self check out at a store. Service is almost dead.
Classic Dry Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 I read somewhere years and years and years ago, that doormen, at some of the truly expensive hotels in London or/and New York (you know the sort of doormen (can't spell concierge) the ones with uniforms, heaps of gold braid and a peaked hat) These guys pay the hotel management for the privilege of being the doorman. Such were the extrordinary tips involved. My favorite tip usually given for poor service is " Always warm the teapot before you brew the tea" That's not true, I just think it, I'm not brave enough to say it.

I have only heared USA have "bag ladies" Just joking. Such packaging assistance I have alnmost never seen in Sweden since supermarkets started (except wrapping Christmas gifts). BradClark Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 I was told once by a friend in the restaurant game, don't bother tipping. It doesn't go to the staff member and only ends up in the till at the end of the shift. So since than, I don't bother anymore.
Dave Hounddriver Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I wonder if we are supposed to tip the elevator boys. You know the ones? The sit on a stool in the elevator all day and push the button for you like we cannot push it or find it ourselves. What the heck is up with that anyway? I have found dozens of those elevator boys in Cebu city
alsuave Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I hate bathroom attendants. I can turn on my own faucet and reach for the soap myself. And no, I don't need a back massage while I'm trying to pee.
