Seems the days are gone where foreigners hid out in the Philippines.

PHUKET: British murder fugitive Michael John Taylor, better known in Phuket as “Mick The Pom”, has been arrested in the Philippines.

Taylor, who celebrated his 50th birthday on September 20 last year, was wanted for the stabbing murder of his girlfriend Jantra Weangta, 27, in Phuket.

Ms Jantra who was found stabbed to death in Taylor’s rented bungalow near Chalong Pier on August 17, 2004 (story here).

The Hull Daily Mail, the local newspaper in Taylor’s hometown in the UK, ran the story today and quoted a British Foreign Office spokesman as saying, “We can confirm the arrest of a British national in the Philippines on March 6 and we are providing consular assistance” (story here).

The Phuket Gazette received unofficial reports that Taylor was taken into custody by officers from the Philippines Bureau of Immigration, which is currently staging a major offensive against fugitives staying in the country (click here).

The arrest comes after long delays and inaction by Phuket law enforcement authorities under the previous Provincial Police Commander Choti Chavalwivat, who had been informed of Taylor’s whereabouts last year (story here).

Gen Choti retired from the Royal Thai Police on September 30 last year.

His replacement, Maj Gen Ong-art Phiewruangnont, handed the case to one of his leading deputies within days of taking up the post of Phuket’s top-ranking police officer.

The Gazette has yet to confirm with Gen Ong-art that he has been informed of Taylor’s arrest.

"The news of Taylor’s latest whereabouts was brought to the Gazette’s attention after patrons at the Dogs Offshore Bar in the beach resort town of Pundakit, about 160km west of Manila and just over an hour’s drive from Subic Bay, said they heard him bragging about the killing to patrons in the bar."

When you're that stupid it's not easy hiding anywhere. 160km west of Manila would be well out into the South China (or West Philippine) Sea.

I was curious as to where this was near Subic, so I looked it up on Google Maps and then searched the for the bar.  There is a lot more to this story.  That is his bar, he has been going as "Mick Dog", and he has been openly living there for a long time.

Certainly not due to excellent police work from either Asian country but due to the persistence of the Phuket Gazette:

 – despite having been given a photo, the arrest warrant for murder and for jumping bail, a phone number, Facebook page, website address and even a map of where to find him.

Yes. 10 YEARS to find him!!! It take LESS time to visit all bars in whole SouthEast Asia :mocking:  and expected he was in one such...

One and the same .... people have known about him living here for ages and apparently when drinking used to brag about it (or so I read) .... I first heard about it over a year ago .... he was quite the celebrity on some of the boards about your neck of the woods as he was a bar owner (he owned Dogs) .... in fact some of the more prestigious bar and club owners visited him recently while he was in the BI holding cell (think he was picked up for something else) ..... he claims he was with a Thai bakla  the night she was killed ..... hell of an alibi and impossible to prove ..... like your gonna find a Thai bakla after all these years .....  :mocking:  :mocking:

Why bother hiding, if the police don't bother...

He isn't the only case. E g an American wanted by USA (according to his ex wife) live openly in Philippines and have taken the daughter from her mother without the Philippine police bother about either - geting pay...
