FlyAway Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 This looks like good news for the Philippines. I have to wonder what is meant by "Tactical Interrogation". http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/588186/red-leaders-captured Benito Tiamzon, the head of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and its armed wing, the New People’s Army (NPA), and six other members of the CPP central committee were arrested on Saturday in Carcar City, south of Cebu City. One of those arrested was Wilma, Tiamzon’s wife, who is also a top-ranked central committee member and the CPP finance officer. Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin confirmed the arrest of the Tiamzons Saturday night. “Yes, Benito and Wilma Tiamzon have been arrested. This is an Army project,” Gazmin said. “They are now undergoing tactical interrogation,” he added. A high-ranking military source said Tiamzon’s arrest would be a “big blow to them [the communist rebels] as he is the chair of the CPP-NPA.” Finding the Tiamzons was “a long operation,” he said. All seven suspects were members of the CPP central committee, he said. The five others arrested were not identified. They were riding in two vehicles, a Starex van and a Toyota Innova, when they were arrested at about 3:15 p.m. in Barangay Aloguinsan, Carcar City, sources said. The operation was conducted by members of the Intelligence Security Group, Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (Isafp), the Philippine Army, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and Carcar police. The Tiamzons were served with arrest warrants for frustrated murder (criminal case 4702) and murder (criminal case number 4703) that have been pending before the Regional Trial Court Branch 31 in Laoang, Northern Samar. The group was brought to the Armed Forces Central Command for tactical interrogation, the sources said. They did not resist arrest, the source said. Saturday was the 117th anniversary of the Philippine Army, which has been at the forefront of the war against the communist insurgency for more than 40 years. All of the country’s high-ranking security officials, led by Gazmin and Armed Forces Chief Gen. Emmanuel Bautista, were in attendance at the anniversary celebrations held early Saturday at Fort Bonifacio. In his speech, Army Chief Maj. Gen. Hernando Iriberri referred to the significant gains that the Army has made in internal security operations. Little did everyone know—or it could be that top security officials were simply being tight-lipped—that the government would catch the two biggest fish of the communist insurgent movement. Last week, President Benigno Aquino III announced that the government would be landing another “big fish” following the arrest of fugitive housing developer Delfin Lee. In August 2012, Mr. Aquino reiterated that the bounty for the capture of Tiamzon still stood at P5.6 million. According to intelligence sources, Tiamzon and his wife Wilma are now the ones “in charge” in the communist hierarchy. The couple has long been considered more influential than Jose Ma. Sison, the founder of the CPP and its political arm, the National Democratic Front, who lives in exile in the Netherlands. Reports as of November 2012 described Tiamzon as the “top New People’s Army leader” while his wife Wilma was described as the “head of the CPP’s national finance commission.” Tiamzon, along with another communist guerrilla leader Jorge Madlos, has a standing arrest warrant for alleged involvement in violent incidents, including attacks on civilian targets. Americano Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 So they just happened to arrest the leaders on Saturday which was the 117th anniversary of the Philippines Army. Yeah right, who do they think will believe that propaganda. And, in a small city like Carcar, what were they doing there? This news story is only to prove they are doing their job. The truth is they don't know who the leaders are.

MikeB Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 This explains some of the background and legal issues re: the arrests: "The National Democratic Front (NDF), through Luis Jalandoni, claimed that the Tiamzons are covered by the Joint Agreement on Safety and Immunity Guarantee (Jasig) signed by the Government of the Philippines (GPH) and the NDF in 1995. The NDF represents all the CPP-aligned rebel groups in the long-running peace talks with the government. In late 1986 and early 1987, the NDF engaged in localized peace talks with the government of Corazon Aquino, PNoy’s mother. Negotiators in various provinces surfaced. When talks bogged down, the military already had gathered reams of information about underground personalities nationwide, which it used in the heightened counter-insurgency operation later on. When talks resumed in the mid-‘90s under the administration of Fidel Ramos, the NDF made sure it would not commit the same error again, thus the insistence on using assumed names for Jasig documents." http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/opinion/2014/03/24/wenceslao-thoughts-arrest-334762

I would make a reply to this but it would be to political to meet the forum rules The rules state, Topics on this forum are to be Philippine related; religious or political posts are not allowed unless they relate to the Philippines. So in general political posts are allowed if related to the Philippines. What I don't want is an all out war on political views of other countries. Also remember one never knows who is reading what is posted so keep that in mind.

I will try to keep that in mind, but I'm Swede :) so I'm not sure if I can avoid to do it sometimes again. When I have mensioned other countries, it have been in COMPARING with the Philippines and/or what someone wrote in this forum, e g when an American complain at the Philippines and I answer USA have been a bad boy too :) (including example from other country). Or when someone said it would be a solution to nationalise in Phils, then I answered it went BAD, when it was done elsewhere (with example). Everything is relative :) Things can be LEARNED from how things were done ELSEWHERE. E g when I discuss Philippine problems with Filipins, and they more or less think it's impossible to be solved, I tell how they where solved in Sweden back when we had similar problems. (I have a lot of history knowledge, about USA too, because such research was a big part of a work I had almost 10 years.) By such comparings they get both solution ideas and see it's hard but isn't impossible to solve. But I understand the problem with political comments. I suppouse I will get hard to avoid trouble when living in Phils :mocking: when I see power abuse in Phils, because we Swedes are known for protesting even when the most powerful countries missbehave against OTHERS than ourselves... (I don't bother much when LOW positioned people try to earn a litle extra by bribes, but bother much when them with much power make BIG unnecesary problems by being greedy...)
