MikeB Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 "A BRITISH national who owns a dive shop and resort in Malapascua Island, Daanbantayan was shot and killed by his security guard during an argument on Black Saturday. Anthony Gilchrist, 34, of England died from multiple gunshot wounds in his head and body, police said. The shooting took place at 7:40 p.m. inside Fish Buddies Dive Shop Resort after Melchor Alciso Jr., 42, got irked when he was allegedly scolded by Gilchrist for reporting late for work. PO3 Alfredo Mandal, chief investigator of Daanbantayan Police Station, said resort employees heard the two arguing and Gilchrist reportedly told Alciso to resign. “Go away and leave,” Gilchrist said, quoting the witnesses. This prompted Alciso to pull out his issued .38 revolver and he shot Gilchrist six times. The firearm was issued by his employer, Arowana Security Agency. The resort employees chartered a motorized banca and brought Gilchrist to the Daanbantayan District Hospital in the mainland, but he died before reaching there. Alciso, a native of Hinundayan, Southern Leyte, was arrested by police. Police recovered the .38 revolver with six empty shells in the cylinder. “Gihurot gyud niya ang usa ka load (He used up all the bullets loaded in the cylinder),” Mandal told Sun.Star Cebu. Police, though, noticed that Alciso reeked of liquor. He will also be subjected to a paraffin test." Dave Hounddriver Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 It is sad to read of yet another expat being killed. On the one hand, he should have the right to run his business without fear of being gunned down by a drunk with a gun. On the other hand, he should have learned the culture of not causing a filipino to publicly lose face. The result is that he lives no more. R.I.P. Anthony Gilchrist.

To late now but since he had problems with the guard before and the guard is employed by a security company then that company should have been the one to deal with him. Now the question is what happens to the business and how was he running it since he has no family in the Philippines according to the news story.

MikeB Posted April 21, 2014 Author Posted April 21, 2014 Well, we don't know that the foreigner had a temper, the article just says that other employees heard them arguing. Ever try to reason with a drunk? This happened on a fairly isolated island, the security agency is in Cebu City and it was a long holiday w/e so they were undoubtedly closed, he had to deal with the situation himself. If the guy was drunk he couldn't have him working as an armed guard at his shop. The guard emptied the revolver into him so that should rule out self defense. At least he's caught and locked up. OK, I stand corrected -- strike out the word foreigner. Reasoning? On shore patrol duties in Sasebo, Japan and Olongapo with drunk and aggressive sailors and marines in a paddy wagon full of vomit. MikeB Posted April 21, 2014 Author Posted April 21, 2014 More info. "AFTER being scolded for reporting to work late, a security guard shot dead a British national who co-owned a dive shop and resort in Malapascua Island, Daanbantayan. Melchor Alciso Jr., 42, had planned to leave the resort in Malapasuca Island, Daanbantayan owned by his employer, British national Anthony Gilchrist, after he would receive his salary on Friday. “Moisturya siya og sakit kaayo (He talked harshly),” said the security guard, 42. “Di makaon ang iyang mga isturya.”Alciso, a widower and father of three, said he should have left Fish Buddies Dive Shop Resort much earlier than he planned. He is from Hinduyan, Southern Leyte. He shot Gilchrist, 34, to death on Black Saturday, at past 7 p.m. “Nawa na ko sa akong kaugalingon ato (I was not myself that time),” said Alciso, who admitted he came in late for work after he went drinking with two friends. Daanbantayan police charged Alciso with murder before the Cebu Provincial Prosecutor’s Office yesterday afternoon. Alciso opted not to answer the complaint during the inquest proceeding conducted by Assistant Provincial Prosecutor Rustom Presas Jr. The complaint, as a result, will be elevated to court for trial. Murder is a non-bailable offense. PO3 Alfredo Mandal, chief investigator, said Alciso had an intent to kill Gilchrist, saying the suspect fired all the six bullets of his service .38 revolver. Witness Edison Salazar, 20, said he saw Alciso shot Gilchrist after the victim turned his back. Miingon siya ‘I’m not scared you...Wa ko mahadlok nimo,’” said Salazar. He said he was near his locker when the incident happened near the shop’s counter. Gilchrist, he said, ran after he was shot by Alciso, but the victim was trapped in the shop’s corner. Salazar and his fellow employees also scampered in different direction. Alciso said he started to work for Gilchrist in September last year. He became a security guard in 2000 after working as a factory worker and earned P6,000 per month. Gilchrist, he said, always scolded him even he did not commit any mistake. Last Saturday night, a resort staff woke Alciso from his sleep when he did not report at 7 p.m. Alciso said he fell asleep after he had a drinking binge with his friends since the morning of Good Friday. He apologized to Gilchrist when he reported to work, but the victim did not listen to him. “Iya kong gibalikas (He badmouthed me),” said Alciso. The suspect said it was the first time he reported late for work. But Salazar said Alciso was always scolded for his tardiness. “Kutob na lang ta sa pagmahay uwahi na ang tanan (It’s too late now),” said Alciso. Alciso had a paraffin test yesterday at the PNP Regional Crime Laboratory Office. He said that after he shot Gilchrist six times, he lay down on the floor beside his employer and regretted what he just did. “Naghinulsol ko sa akong gibuhat (I was sorry for what I did),” he told reporters yesterday. PO1 Louie Mesa, of Tourist Police, said he thought the suspect also killed himself. “Naghigda man siya didto pero nilihok man (We thought he was dead, but he moved),” said Mesa, who went to the scene. http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/local-news/2014/04/21/guard-accused-killing-boss-faces-murder-charge-339158
Markham Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 Tony Gilchrist will (probably) be most remembered by the Malapascuanos and Daanbantayanos for his tremendous efforts in the immediate aftermath of super-typhoon Yolanda. He and other members of his family in the UK raised over £10,000 to help locals with food aid as well as clearing and rebuilding their homes. RIP Tony.
