Mr Lee Posted May 15, 2011 Author Posted May 15, 2011 On this one Lee, we will have to agree to disagree. I am not in favour of citizens carrying guns. Maybe being born in Canada where they are not allowed, or living in the UK where even most of the police do not carry guns has something to do with my beliefs, I'm not sure. I have carried a gun (a previous job required it), I did fire at and hit someone, .... I don't want to have to do that again and if I am not carrying, then I won't. I would prefer to let them have what they want and live. Also if their intent is to kill you, they will try whether you have a gun or not.But as one of the members says.... to each their own. We each have our beliefs and are allowed to express them, and even if we disagree we can still respect each other and be friends This is one debate that could go on and on and on. I guess it is like Marmite, you either like it or not. I will never fault someone else for their opinion, and I did say, we all see things differently based on where we were brought up, but I did have to point out when Wallaby said not having guns makes thing safer, that it is a matter of opinion since statistics say otherwise, and so do many of the people in govt within those countries that do not allow guns to the average citizen. As you said, to each his own, and if all they take is property when they rob you, then that is fine and dandy, but when they rape women and children, and then kill all who could be witnesses against them, then having a gun to at least have a chance would come in handy. With that said IMO no one who has not been trained in proper use should be able to own one. Below is one such story, but I think her quick thinking and hand techniques worked pretty good as well.
Forum Support Old55 Posted May 15, 2011 Forum Support Posted May 15, 2011 Maybe... I would own a gun.If ever I move to Philippines full time then reluctantly I would consider a tactical autoloading shotgun in my home strictly for self defense. I would not carry a hand gun on my person in the Philippines even if it were legal to do so.In a perfect world I would hope to have trustworthy family members living with me or very nearby and would not need a gun.FWIW I am a gun guy here in the States but things are very different living in Philippines. Funny thing my opinion has changed from what I posted two years ago.I would not own a gun in Philippines at all. I any of us were to shoot a local person it would go badly for the Foreigner. If I felt Philippines or the area I lived in there were to become dangerous to the point I needed to arm myself I would move back to the States. For many years I was an active member of International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association (IHMSA). I missed the nice people and the competition, lots of good memories and fun.
Mr Lee Posted May 15, 2011 Author Posted May 15, 2011 OK I drifted off a little in my post, so lets keep this about owning guns in the Philippines, and not about gun ownership in general.
Fast&Furious Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 In Australia we don't carry guns and that's what makes our society safer.Everybody has different standards and giving a gun to someone is just wrong. You see why the USA has so many gun related accidental deaths....even in the schools...actually those are not so accidental. The term safer is debatable, READ THIS and THIS. Sorry but you should not base your judgement on those information. The first one from ABC news is sensationalism, not journalism. It happens that I lived in that State for 3 years and I can guarantee you that crime is low compared 90 % of the world. What does it says? Ms Redmond says new figures from the Bureau of Statistics show the number of murders is up by nearly 23 per cent since 2002.She says armed robberies have risen by more than 10 per cent and assaults are up by nearly 4 per cent.Ms Redmond says there has been an escalation of violent crime in recent months and the State Government has failed to respond Basically if they had 10 murders per year, now they are getting not even 11.And, take in consideration that it comes from the Opposition.....POLITICS. Do I need to add more?I can guarantee you that in Adelaide, capital of South Australia, you can go around safely at 3 AM and on a Saturday night, you can see plenty of good girls going to the Casino for a night out with friends and barely dressed! If you want to get a real idea, you should come here or at least compare the ratios between crime and overall population. From the second site, you won't understand that while Australian crime has risen in recent years, we may still have a 0.4 % crime to population rate compared to a 5.0 % of the USA.And, since someone mentioned in the UK cops sometimes don't carry guns, then in New Zealand they NEVER carry any gun.....and indeed they have an even lower rate of criminality.I can see it as a cultural problem. Americans love guns since the wild west, so no one is going to change your love in this lifetime.

OK as I said in the post above yours, lets only refer to the topic at hand. IF IT WERE LEGAL FOR US EXPATS TO OWN GUNS, WOULD YOU GET ONE? Meaning in the Philippines. You got the last word, so let everyone get back to the topic at hand. My bad for me helping to take it off topic.
Art2ro Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Yes, I would surely get a few fire arms, especially with semi or automatic features and a good security/surveillance system with sensors of all kinds and video cameras so I can see the other person(s) who may also be carrying or concealing weapons so I can get the drop on him or her! And with that said, any foreigner can live anywhere in the Philippines and feel sort of safe knowing that he or she is packing fire power and can say, "lock and load", "you talking to me", "make my day" or "asta la vista baby"!

Bill Bernard Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 I would add this about guns. (1) IF YOU ARE NOT SURE YOU COULD PULL THE TRIGGER AND KILL SOMEONE,, DONT GET A GUN. It is actually more dangerous than not having one. Dont up the ante if you wont back it up. (2) A shotgun is the ultimate for home defense, you wont miss, and you wont kill someone in the next room either. (3) Dont leave someone half dead. Make sure they cant tell their side of the sto0 ry. (4) Take security or a relative with you if you go to a questionable area, let them carry and use the gun if required . Hitting a moving target with a handgun is difficult. The chances of killing a bystander are great, and whitey with a gun will do serious time in a hell hole if he has GSR on his hands.
