There's been a couple more developments in the last few days, I wasn't going to post them because there doesn't seem to be much interest. I'll post the Opinion piece from today's paper, it sums up the whole disgusting (imo) situation to this point. The last line is a real understatement.

THE lawyer of Cebu Puericulture Center and Maternity House is correct. The overly discussed baby-taping incident is turning into a circus, with questionable statements made by one side of the conflict and then by the other. Or to put it in another way, we are going from one surprising twist to the other. Ryan Noval and Jasmine Badocdoc, parents of the baby whose mouth was alleged to have been taped by hospital personnel, have come out to deny that they had settled the case. Information and documents earlier provided by the hospital lawyer, Cornelio Mercado, showed that Badocdoc forged the “settlement” without Noval’s presence. Noval and Badocdoc are not married.

Now Badocdoc is saying that her signature in the amicable settlement was forged. She showed specimens of her signature that were supposedly different from the one in the document. In response, Mercado presented to reporters photocopies of the P15,000 check, the payment of which was part of the “settlement.” It also contained Badocdoc’s signature.

We are back to the question: Which side is telling us the truth?

We asked the same question when this issue erupted to become fodder for social and traditional media discussion—-when the hospital denied its personnel taped the mouth of the baby and claimed that having some babies under its care use pacifiers was not their practice. The hospital even insinuated the parents taped their own baby’s mouth. The answer to the question eventually became a no-brainer when three more parents surfaced to disprove the claim of the hospital about the non-use of tapes and pacifiers. In the latest twist, more questions can be asked. Are the hospital management and its lawyer so desperate to put the parents in a bad light that they would come up with fake settlement documents? Why did it take time for Badocdoc to come out and claim that her signature was forged? When the taping incident was first reported, views in social and traditional media were sympathetic to the baby’s parents. In the amicable settlement twist, some “commenters” are starting to see Noval and Badocdoc in a different light. Many people can no longer be sure where the truth in this entire baby-taping mess really lies."

I think a lot of people are interested in this topic but how can anyone make a sensible comment when we don't know what the truth is?  I good investigative reporter should have gotten to the bottom of this incident long ago. I guess that's too much to expect considering where we are.

You know Mr. Americano, good investigative reporting is rare in the USA also. Most reporting in the USA is done by regurgitating press releases.

It's hardly the fault of the reporters, the governing agencies can't even get answers. The hospital and nurses definitely lied and (trying to word this carefully) it's very possible the mother is not being completely truthful about the money she received and the settlement she supposedly signed. The day of the incident there were 2 nurses managing 28 babies. The hospital's policy calls for a maximum ratio of 6 babies to 1 nurse, more then double the babies the 2 nurses had responsibility for. The nurse-supervisor's log indicates she worked at least a 20 hour shift the day of the incident. I thought there was an overabundance of qualified, out of work nurses. Something seriously wrong there.
