Crime In The Philippines

Exactly. Different spoting chance by the criminals too. That's why I asume it's biger risk to be white.

'locals' will have more trouble spotting Asian foreigners on a bike whizzing past with a Singaporean driver and a pinay on the back, but they will do better, than we will. And if they are close enough to hear them conversing in English, which they will be, then it will be totally obvious that the Asian guy is a rich foreigner even if they cannot tell from visual clues alone.

Asians like Japanese and Koreans, etc, can be equally rich to white people, they also can stay out late in bars. I am not much of a casino person, but the odd times I have been in casinos in Asia the Asian foreigners there did not outnumber westerners by the standard 2 to 1 you see in most places, but more like 5 to 1.

Asians in the Philippines are there for the exact same reasons as westerners. For the girls, mostly and for other inexpensive entertainment. However their numbers pad up because more of them have legit jobs like in Japanese corporations and as students like Koreans.

"Asians in the Philippines are there for the exact same reasons as westerners"  I disagree with your statement. Westerners do not come to the Philippines to attend school for education in English or any other subject which Asians do by the thousands each year. Thousands of Asians come to the Philippines every year on Student Visas. Has anyone ever heard of a Westerner coming here on a Student Visa?  If there are any it will be a very low number. Most Koreans who come to the Philippines on a Student Visa are coming here to learn English because its not taught in Korean school like it is in the Philippines.

read through the reply properly. I did say in the last part of the paragraph that there are quite a few Asians coming for other reasons than why westerners come - which is largely women, and cheap entertainment. Like students, and also there seem to me many more Asian expats that have got jobs in especially Japanese companies than westerners, at least in the Visayas. The kind of expats that bring their own families, and children.

there are some western students in the Philippines. Not many, but some. Almost all are in Manila.

Most Koreans who come to the Philippines on a Student Visa are coming here to learn English because its not taught in Korean school like it is in the Philippines.

huh? English is definitely taught in schools in Korea. There are zillions of language schools, in Korea. They only come to the Philippines to study English, because it's cheap.

Not quite accurate. There are a number of western medical students currently in Cebu. I know because I teach the medical students their ACLS.

unlike in Thailand there cannot be that many westerners doing TEFL courses in the Philippines. Although there must be a few.  I once met this group of Americans in Bangkok who said they were students doing 'South East Asian Studies' at some educational facility. I was with this other guy and we asked them what languages they were learning. They said they were not learning any and there was no languages on the curriculum. When they left, me and this guy agreed that it must be a really substandard course, for it to be called 'South East Asian Studies', and for them not to be learning any language, How could you take French or German studies, withourt learning the language.

Not true. The reason they come to the Philippines in their droves is that English is taught here to international standards. Many of the Koreans who come to Davao for language training already have jobs to go to in Australia, the US or Canada but are unable to take up those jobs until they have a certificate of an acceptably high standard.

Now that I have added to your knowledge, please slope off and go and annoy elsewhere.

well, I used to live in Cambridge, where in addition to the famous university there are many English language schools. It is a multi million pound industry for what is rather a small town. And where many Korean students are prepared to pay good money and turn up to improve their English. But not the kind of Koreans, that you see in the Philippines. Difference between the schools is a great deal of not just standard of instruction, but a great deal of money too. Maybe you had better ask the next Korean language student you see in Davao, whether they would prefer their diploma to have the words 'Oxford' or 'Cambridge' in the title. Although I am sure that anything can be arranged in the Philippines, for a price.

No. better NOT ask such question, because it would be stupid  :)  because of the huge cost difference...

Of course I would prefer a new Merzedes/BMW before a Suzuki/Toyota MT of old parts, if I would get them for same price  :mocking:

What elitist nonsense! There is no effective difference between a certificate issued by a language school in Oxford, Cambridge or Brighton to one issued in Manila, Davao or Cebu. They are all equally valid for the purpose for which they are obtained.

Hello Jack P,

I tried in post # 23 but I'm losing control and my patience.  This whole topic went into a black hole of off topics.

Sorry Jack P.......
