Hiring Practices

Our cousin worked for Gaisano for almost 6 months... she had to sign an agreement to quit before 6 months so they don't have to give her all the benefits.
That's an IDIOTIC law the RP government have made, SABOTAGING the labour effectivity. It's rather many RP companies, who have put that in system  :1 (103):

If something similar would be made by a company in Sweden, then the worker get SAME benefits anyway, and the vacation pay have to be paid DIRECT at ending instead of next year, so in Sweden companies would LOSE some to do such...  :mocking:

So my better half's sister had a baby and used to work at Gaisano part time of course

So after a couple years off she gos back to apply again and is told flat out

No your to fat

It is more fun here

Listen to this, my friend has been working for Metro in Cebu for a couple of years on the standard 6 month to 6 month contract that they do. This year she turned 28, and she did not get another contract. According to her, she did not get another contract because she is now too old. LOL....I don't know how the store gets away with that.

I must admit, thinking back now....when you look at the female staff at Metro, most look in there early to mid 20's. I really can't remember seeing any older girls unless they were obvious management.

Sorry for your sis-in-law. But isn't it great living in a country where an employer can hire who he wants, when he wants and not have to be worried about being sued by every special interest group for not following the rule de jure.

I understand what you are talking about in regards to the good old USA, where lawsuits fly like birds, dropping bird sh*t on the whole society.

However, the legal discrimination allowed in PH is too far to the other end of the spectrum.  Abby is a trained CPA with 10+ years of experience with an American company, but it will hard for her to find another job due to the age discrimination.

And the sexual "harassment" these young girls in retail go through would never be tolerated in the west.  I have seen them touched inappropriately several times, so there must be a lot of it going on.  They seem to just accept it and I know that culturally Filipinos are more touchy / feely, but I sure would not want my wife or girlfriend subjected to it.

Again we are looking at the way things are done here through the eyes of a foreigner .... anyone remember how it was back in the US many years ago when the same type of things happened before the politically correct crowed came to power ..... I do ..... it is just that the times haven't changed here yet and when you have a  work force that is many times greater than the job market you can get away with anything ..... and they do .....

Here is a good example on why they work force is constantly rotated ..... my asawa went to Mcdoo's to buy me a big and tasty .... the girl told her "sorry ma'am we don't have any" ... she asked are you out or just not cooked yet ...... "no ma'am we have no lettuce" .... my asawa "that's OK just give me one with out lettuce" (the lettuce is usually wilted anyway) " Oh no ma'am we can't sell a burger with out lettuce" ... :1 (103): ...... so for the lack of lettuce and the ability to make a decision they lost a sale ..... in the US I've bought burgers when they were out of toppings .... in fact they will usually ask you if it is OK ..... but here the "one in charge" is not to be disturbed and the staff can't make any kinds of decisions .... nor do they look out for th owners best interest .... I mean after all they will have to find a new job in a few months anyway ....

If I could have a peso for th number of times I have seen indecisions on small matters taken here I could afford a nice vacation ..... :hystery: :hystery:

:cheersty:

I'm sure you have seen the help wanted signs:

Wanted

Thin & pretty female

age 20-22

College grad

minimum 5'2"

usually they use the expression 'pleasing personality' rather than say outright 'thin and pretty female'.

and of course however 'pleasing' their personality is, they will almost certainly be fired, when their six months contract ends. I am communicating with someone in Manila who has said her contract will be expiring in October - only a matter of days, before I will turn up in the Philippines. This is good news for me, because it means she will have plenty of time on her hands to accompany me on a visit of several days, and nights, to somewhere like Pagsanjan Falls, which I am lining up. Which would have been difficult to arrange, were she still working 12 hours a day in the mall.

Yes, they CAN, because the Phil government don't stop that very bad behaviour  :bash:

We had similar problems in Sweden too around 100 years ago, but then the poor people protested, striked, started an own political party and didn't sell their votes, so their own party wonn, and started making laws protecting the poor...

(It even became to much protection of the workers, to litle protection for small companies, but that problem is reduced now.)

Here is a good example on why they work force is constantly rotated ..... my asawa went to Mcdoo's to buy me a big and tasty .... the girl told her "sorry ma'am we don't have any" ... she asked are you out or just not cooked yet ...... But that's a reason to KEEP the good workers... :)

When I will start my business in Phils, I will aim at employments "for ever" *, and I will tell them so in startup,

but they will need to show they work good enough with good attitude, so first they will get a short test period. After the test period, they will have to GO ON working like that, then they will have the work as long as they want (and my business is still running. I aim at go on working after retirement age, enough to keep it running until wife/kids can take over if they want to.)

*Historical, before the big industrialization when people moved to cities, Sweden had something like "life time" work in same company. Back then there were big companies with combinations of farming and e g iron manufactory in own villages, all owned by same family. Many workers stayed there from birth to death. The company took care of them AFTER RETIREMENT too.  There were employed on one year contracts in such places too, which had to move each autumn. I suppouse they were bad workers or troublemakers, because many others where allowed to stay for ever.

I believe something similar would be good for (rural) Philippines, surely keep the good ones.  Because why doing a good job, if you are fired when the contract ends anyway... ?

I think you will find that there is quite a lot of what the boys and girls in the economic division call Frictional Unemployment, in the Philippines. Thousands of those 6-month contracts run out every day for some Filipino or other.

Happens all over the world. Saves the employer, Holiday pay, Maternity benefits, Sickness benefits and in a lot of cases. Social Insurance stoppages and Tax sometimes, can be lost, in the Paperwork.

Putting these workers down as casual Labour in some instances, can be an enormous benefit to an unscrupulous employer. One thing is paying less, than the Minimum wage and enforced longer hours

I have 3 nieces and 2 nephews on Agency Payrolls and that is even worse.

The US Post Office used to be a great job.  Full time, good pay, good benefits.  Now it is almost all done by temps.  And if you do get hired full time it is nowhere near what they used to pay.  It happens everywhere.

But I have never seen it so obvious as here ha ha  :tiphat:
