MikeB Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 It sounds like the ex-cop foreigner objected to the other guy ordering a security guard to get him coffee. The combatants are 78 and 76, I hope they get an early court date. "Tuesday, June 24, 2014 THE brother of Mayor Michael Rama has been accused of punching a 76-year-old American national inside a fastfood joint in Barangay Basak, Cebu City. A complaint for physical injuries has been filed against Fernando Lopez Rama, 78, by Henri Marcel Angers, who hails from Boston, Massachusetts. Fernando is reportedly the mayor’s older brother. Angers said Fernando walked in while he was having breakfast inside the joint a week ago. He said he didn’t like the way Fernando acted, and reprimanded the latter. “He was telling the security guard to order for him, which is not right,” said Angers, a former policeman. He accused Fernando of pouring hot coffee on him, before the latter allegedly punched him in the face. No settlement Because of the incident, the two men were brought to the Mambaling Police Station. Angers said the police wanted them to settle the matter amicably, but he refused. Sun.Star Cebu tried to get Fernando’s side, to no avail. The mayor, for his part, said he didn’t know about the incident. “I have not seen him in a couple of weeks. I was in America a few weeks ago and I have yet to see him,” he said. He said he was surprised to learn that his brother had gotten involved in a fight, considering the latter’s age. “What’s the reason for the fight? Where they talking about issues, are they friends? Were they fighting about a girl?” the mayor asked in jest. Rama then said he will check on his brother right away. http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/local-news/2014/06/24/foreigner-files-complaint-against-mayors-brother-punching-him-350100
OnMyWay Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 That reminds me of a story in South Florida, probably around 2003, just after I moved there. As you probably know Florida attracts a lot of old retirees. Two older couples, I think 80ish, were in line at the movie theater. One old guy accused the other old guy of cutting in the line and they got into it. One pushed the other and he fell backwards, hit his head, and died. Stupid way to end your life, arguing over a place in line.

Jack Peterson Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 What a dip stick. Whats it got to do with him if a guard orders his coffee. Can't say much about Cebu but here in Dumaguete, it is quite a normal thing, for the often, bored guards to lend a hand to staff. in many cases it is nice to have an extra pair of hands, especially if it is just a refill of coffee. In some of the eateries here, I have even seem them clear tables and such like. to me, I look at at it as being part of the team. As long as it does not deter them away too long from their main Duties. it can keep customers Happy, to be shown that little bit of extra service. I wonder, if things would have been different, if the Coffee had been for this Gentle man Hey Ho! another day in the life of the Ex-pat table thumping, "Look I am here" syndrome :tiphat:
Popular Post MikeB Posted June 25, 2014 Author Popular Post Posted June 25, 2014 That's a good point, the guards here are more like store employees. They're trained to give customer assistance as much as possible, quite unlike the US where they are generally used as security and theft control only. Because he's an ex-cop he probably felt empathy with the guard being ordered to get coffee. It may well have been a regular routine and he stuck his nose into something he shouldn't have. At least the old fool wasn't carrying a gun.
robert k Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 American and retired cop, I'm not surprised. Police in the US get used to ordering people around and the majority of people just automatically do as they are told even if there is no apparent good reason for the police to tell them to do whatever. The police get pretty testy when you don't do what they say. Great that it is being exported to the Philippines. :mocking:

Robert, I can understand to a degree, your sentiments on this but I can see this incident and others like it, laying another course of bricks, on the every growing height of the "Us and Them, dividing wall" When ( As others) You get to live here permanently, things like this that are their, way of living, become so very much more apparent. As Azon always tells me, " It is, the Filipino way" I guess what I am saying is, how would we like it, if an Ex Filipino cop, started to throw his weight about in the USA or the UK, or any where, trying to stop something we have been doing for ever. Morning All. :tiphat: :morning1:
robert k Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Jack, there is a story that a big car with New York state plates was in slowly moving traffic in Texas and the driver was laying on the horn and the pickup truck with the ubiquitous gun rack in the rear window stopped and the man got out with his rifle and shot the car through the engine and the car died. When the car driver asked why the rifleman did that, the rifleman replied that the car was making so much noise he felt he had to put it out of it's misery. :mocking: I don't have a clue why the retired American police officer would think it was any of his business if the security guard wanted to get someone a cup of coffee. It doesn't sound to me like any law was being broken and the American had no authority even if there was. Frankly, I hope the Americans nose didn't hurt the mayor's brother's knuckles. :999: Hopefully the American learned something also, but that is a little much to hope for.
Dave Hounddriver Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Retired cop? I have to wonder as I have met more people here who claim to be 'retired cop' or 'sniper' or 'paratrooper' or 'martial artist' or some other action figure and I have to wonder how many minutes each of them spent in that profession. But who knows, this guy may actually be a retired cop.
