I am surprised by the lack of commentary over the "Biggest Scandal to Hit the Philippines" since the last "Biggest Scandal to Hit the Philippines." Is the subject too sensitive?

My recommendation is to put every politician in jail as soon as they are declared the winner after an election. This is one way to stop corruption Philippine style. It also saves time and money.

The main coverage has been on PDAF, not DAP (the Presidential equivalent), but that may change. I was surprised to see the picture below of Senator Enrile being arrested. My understanding is the case against him was comparatively much weaker since there were no witnesses to him directly taking kickbacks except (possibly) his chief of staff Ms Reyes, also arrested yesterday. Given that and his age I thought he might skate. But they're a long way from convictions. I think they're only scratching the surface of this thing, the more they dig the more they'll find. At some point they stop digging.

You know JJ, I moved here just when this whole thing blew up and have been following it and been thinking about it. Personally I think the DAP is a program that shows promise (if it is not abused). I prefer it to the US system of you vote for my bill and ill vote for yours. Or where US congress takes the defense bill (for example) and add everything under the sun to it.

I like the idea of each congress critter and senator getting a set amount of cash to pass out. After all who knows what their district need more then them and their staff? As I walk around my town and city I see many buildings, outdoor basket ball courts, street overpasses etc etc. marked "priority project of So and So". ((when I first saw them I thought to myself, Man, what a bunch of conceited blankidy blanks lolol)).

Its just to bad that the system was abused so much that it seems to have been scrapped.

Just MHO

Has there ever been a senator in the Philippines who wasn't put in jail at least one time. Senator Enrile had already been arrested 2 times in the past. This being his 3rd time to be arrested for his illegal activities why do the people keep voting for him?  Its stupid to vote for someone who you already know is a criminal.

Well. The US system is just an other way to buy power  :)   but there it's big companies buying senators instead by giving them huge contibutions to the election campaigns...

(In Sweden it's SOME contributions, but hard restricted.  Plus each party get an amount from tax money, amount size depending of percent votes in last election.

Concerning buying votes, it even became a scandal in Swedish media, when one party assisted retired people to get access to voting - I asume they recomended which party to vote for at the same time...

Well. Hard if all alternatives are corupt...  THEN it's understandable they vote for one who pay best...  :mocking:

I have told some Filipins, when the problem with corrupt politicians come up, how the poor got it solved in Sweden 100 years ago.

(Many protested in demonstrations. Strikes. Followed up by the poor started an OWN party and voted for it. That party have had the power many of the years since then. At least a long time, it has been much transparancy in Sweden, so some tendensies of corruption has been cleaned out.  (Not counting free "representation" dinners and such.)
