Magnitude 6.4 earthquake strikes off coast of southern Philippines

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippines on Monday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said, but there were no reports of damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

The epicentre of the quake was 146 kilometres east of the town of General Santos on the southern island of Mindanao, southeast of Cebu, the USGS said.

The USGS initially said the quake was magnitude 6.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology measured the quake at 6.1 magnitude.

The quake was detected 88 kilometres southeast from the coastal town of Don Marcelino but was barely noticed by residents, said the chief government seismologist Renato Solidum.

“It is not alarming,” he told reporters.

The quake had a depth of about 10 kilometres, he added.
