Philippine City Offers Bounties For Dead Rats

Finally some Filipinos are catching on that rats carry and spread diseases. Well, it looks like the men in the picture haven't learned much yet, they are handling dead rats with their bare hands.

I have an interesting story to tell about this subject. About 2 years ago I ordered some plastic mouse traps from a company in another country. Philippines Customs refused the shipment saying it was contraband. The company offered to refund my money but I requested that my order be shipped again. Customs refused the shipment again. Why would plastic mouse trips be contraband?  Does Customs personnel think its illegal to catch and kill mice in the Philippines?  I have ordered Stun Guns from the same company and all of them have been accepted without a problem so doesn't make any sense why plastic mouse traps would be refused.

I guess the answer is:  Only in the Philippines. Some things here make no sense at all.

While working nightshift, I have seen some pretty big rats in Cebu, at first I thought they were large cats till I got a good look at them.

I am following the Paulino administration in Olongapo with some interest - partly because a Filipino friend is a part of it, and partly because Olongapo was the only city in the Philippines to kick out its dynasty - the Gordons - at the last election.

So it is possible to get rid of all of a city's rats at one time, very interesting. I would have thought it couldn't happen in the Philippines. Only a few hundred cities to go.

They probably don`t know what a mousetrap is so instead of making a mistake they ban it.

Paulino is doing his best and so far is winning the hearts of Olongapo. We just went thru 5+ weeks of straight rain and the city didn't flood. Partly due to his efforts to get the rivers dredged (looks about 30-40% done). It will probably take a whole year to complete.

This awareness campaign with the Rat catching is good too. How often have you seen people wading thru floodwaters when they really didnt need to be?

I have also heard that he is of an honest sort and not corrupted. He still has a few more years to get some real progress started
