Bottom line is IMHO this is one of the few areas that we really don't need to reinvent the wheel. There is a reason why almost every Filipino house has good bars on the windows and heavy doors, they work.

I couldn't agree with you more, heavy bars all round, both dogs in the grounds at night and not Advertising things we treasure, Motor bikes out of view,  Common Sense approach and all, will be as safe, as we can Hope for.

Small dogs are great for raising the alarm. Big dogs are great for scaring the bejesus out of people. Eitherway, the dogs need to be trained to not take food from strangers otherwise you will end up with dead dogs (food laced with poison) and missing property. You need a good fenced or walled place to so that the dogs can run free and keep the thiefs on their toes. Also, keep the dogs locked up whenever guests or workers are at your place. Do not let them get friendly with anyone but the family that lives there.

I like the idea of a trip wire system for the house should someone get past the dogs. Thiefs like to come in during the rain as the noise masks their movements and dogs don't typically hang out in the rain.

The idea of protecting yourself with a firearm is truly individually dependent. You will never know if you will be able to actually shoot someone until you are presented the situation (what if it is a kid, are you willing to shoot a kid?). Then if you are not, it will be turned against you. If you do use it, make sure that the perpetrator cannot have his day in court or you will regret it.
