Popular Post Dave Hounddriver Posted October 7, 2014 Popular Post Posted October 7, 2014 I'm the forum newbie and should probably STFU Its tempting to think that way when new, but please don't. We all tend to chat here the same as we would sitting around table in the local coffee shop so elbow up to the table and make yourself heard when you feel the need :-)

Alby Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 My 2 cents or pesos :) 1- stay away from dugs and alcohol places and especially at late times ... 2- never let your gf feel she can financially benefit if you are gone 3- don't go head to head with Filipinos. Whatever you will prove will be ignored. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Popular Post Gator Posted October 7, 2014 Popular Post Posted October 7, 2014 5. Don't flash large amounts of cash and be careful when making ATM withdrawals; even a few thousand pesos could be a substantial windfall to a would-be thief. Also, leave the "bling" and your fancy watch at home; or trade in your Rolex for a Timex before moving. No piece of jewelry is worth getting killed over.
Hey Steve Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 (edited) Breaking into one's home to rob whereas it all goes bad and the foreigner gets killed. A foreigner's home is like a gold mind to some of these "bandits". (safeguard your home-common sense) extremely rare though with safety measures in place Edited October 7, 2014 by Hey Steve

Larry45 Posted October 7, 2014 Author Posted October 7, 2014 (edited) 1. Poor choice of wife / gf. This is number one with a bullet and has been rehashed so many times it needs no introduction. Don't just pick the hottest, youngest one that will have you. Detach a little and do some research on your sweetie. Maybe even hire an investigator. It really pays to put some thought into this one. I have the impression that local private investigators are not, in general, well thought of, and are quite expensive. I don't really know how one would set about doing research on a girl who takes a shine to you. My gf would qualify as a "hottie" (not trying to boast; she is a woman that men stare at) and at the outset I was very cautious, to the point of asking her to move to another city (to Olongapo, where I had friends, from Quezon City) and share an apartment with another girl whose bona fides were beyond dispute. She agreed to do that, which was a pretty good indication. Yes it cost me in terms of apartment rental and furniture, but it would have cost about the same to hire a detective agency and we got some furniture which we still have... 2. Engaging in a public business. Not only does this draw extra attention to you, but it offends most Filipinos, who will think you are taking jobs from them. And you're likely to step on someone's toes along the way. Disgruntled US postal workers have nothing on disgruntled sari-sari employees. And money-lending is extremely dangerous and needs a post of it's own, but I will include it here. I think a lot depends on the business. If you are seriously "in business" and it is a business that Filipinos don't do, and is both highly technical and is export driven, I think you should be fine. Only a fool would try any of the business activities that are reserved for Filipinos. Hi Methersgate....'export-driven' is the key here. By 'public' I meant some kind of business where everyone in town knows you have a business, and are therefore, very rich. At least in their minds. Basically the opposite of laying low and riding under the radar. As for background checking one's girl, there's many ways to do that. As simple as another forum member visiting her at her work or visiting her at hospital where her Grandma is in need of money...or just having some hot dude hit on her. That's basically what the PI's do here, but I'm sure they are much more skilled and can't be bought...in most cases. Yeah, it sucks checking up on your girl, but its best in the long run. Methersgate Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 I think there are two All these things listed above? What's new? They can get you killed no matter what country you are in! I think there are two items that are more particularly Filipino in the above list - one is "face" and what may flow from causing someone to lose face, and the other is the importance of even a little money when surrounded by people who have none.
Larry45 Posted October 7, 2014 Author Posted October 7, 2014 All these things listed above? What's new? They can get you killed no matter what country you are in! Oh, Bob. That's like a Detroit native saying, "Crime happens everywhere. I feel very safe living here." Foreigners are being targeted now in the Philippines because there is no justice for the victims. I am just trying to make sure everyone is safe, or at least forewarned before coming here. Caveat emptor.
