Pshcp For Canadians - Clarified

Hey all!  If anyone is a former CANADIAN Federal government employee - including military - and is bringing their private insurance plan (PSHCP) with them to the Philippines, here is that clarification I promised a long time ago.

Yes, it was quite a while ago when I called my Military Pension office to find out about PSHCP coverage in the Philippines.  Between this office, the Military Pension /PSHCP Information personnel and the PSHCP people at Sun Life, I was told that coverage is exactly the same as what we are entitled to in Canada minus the hospital - what the heck does that mean?  Minus the hospital?

Well, I finally got my clarification.  The PSHCP plan for out-of-country is switched over to a company called Allianz Global.  Once I got hold of them, it was too easy to get all the information I wanted!  Information such as the meaning of "Minus the Hospital":  Any professional fee that takes place in a hospital is not covered.

Ok, so it sounds dumb but that's what I was told!  Our hospital rooms themselves are covered up to a limit per day (3 levels of coverage - up to CDN$ 60/140/220 a day) but anything in a professional manner otherwise is not covered - doctors, physio, X-rays, dental, prescriptions that take place on the hospital grounds are not covered.  Off the hospital grounds are fine and then are covered but not if they take place on the hospital grounds.  Be careful that your doctor does not have his offices on hospital grounds - find one that has his offices away from a hospital (across the road is great!) and then you are covered while in his office.  Same with getting prescriptions filled - do so away from the hospital grounds!

One thing that I asked about - the dreaded "Do Not Get Out of Jail Hospital" card...  If it looks like the hospital will want to hold a person until payment is made, go to the hospital's billing office and have them call Allianz Global - they will work out something with the hospital to get you out of there ASAP.  Best thing to do in any situation upon admittance to the hospital?  Get a call through to Global Allianz and let them know where you are and why!

The really good part about all of this is that, once we are eligible and obtain coverage, PhilHealth is available for a lot of the expenses not covered above!

Even better yet, I hear that JGF will buy a beer or two for anyone who does not survive their medical care in the Philippines!

   :mocking:

I had heard of Global Allianz before, I think I was offered some travel insurance through them. That was 25 years ago so they have been around.

I did some research on them and, yeah, they do a lot of insurance for those traveling out of their home countries and in many different countries.
