A student was murdered during what seems to be a home invasion in Subulan, near Dumaguete.  It belongs on our forum as she was engaged to marry an expat:

Below is an excerpt.  For the full story go here:

A graduating college  student of Silliman University in Dumaguete City was found dead with multiple stab and hack wounds at her rented apartment in Sibulan town, Negros Oriental, at about 3 a.m. yesterday.

Police reports identified the fatality as Myra Abrenica Gabato, 25, a Business Administration student. Her younger sister, Melanie, was discovered hogtied by still unknown suspects, who had forced their way inside the victims' apartment at Ablir Street, Barangay Poblacion, a few blocks away from the Sibulan police station.

. . . . . .

Early police investigation showed that Myra was engaged to a German national, whom she was going to marry soon after graduation. The sisters had moved into their new apartment, owned by Pamela Jansen, a Filipina married to a German national, only last October 26 on a three-year contract, at P35,000 a month.

The Gabato sisters are from Moalboal town in Cebu province.

I only know what I read, but if that is the monthly rent that a university student was paying then that is crazy high.

Most likely the German was paying so price is no big deal.

I have not seen the apartment but the area has places for rent at 1/4 of that amount.  Perhaps the paper misprinted and it should be 3500 per month.  Or it might be that the German is paying the bill and he does not know the prices in the area.

This doesn't sound like a home invasion.  It sounds personal. I mean to kill one and tie up the other?  Just sounds off to me.

One thought I had is...If the German National follows this up with authorities and will be seeking justice, there will likely be a cost associated with the investigation-that's if he bothers to pursue it.

Dave I have to go with you here, a Misprint. Reason I say this, is that the owner of the house is married to a German: Press Quote "House owner, Pamela Jansen, who married a German national, owner of Seaview in Cangmating Sibulan" and I doubt very much there is any or at least little, misunderstanding on rental values in that area.

Rumors:

There are lots of local blogs about this story.  It seems the cops have the suspects now.  The rumors say that the criminals were from Moalboal (same as victims) and actually worked for the victims family.  It seems the criminals had heard that the girls had over 100,000 pesos cash on the premises and were trying to get them to give it up.  It seems the one girl recognized the criminal and had to be silenced.

If there is any truth at all to the rumors, it reinforces the truism that when you have any cash at all in your house you must keep your mouth absolutely shut.

Absolutely amazing!  Not only did they catch the  guys but the rumors appeared to be true AND there was a report in the paper that wraps it all up.  Here's the link and the story for those still following . . . .

http://www.visayandailystar.com/2014/November/11/negor1.htm

Two suspects in the brutal murder of a Silliman University coed were arrested yesterday in Moal-boal, Cebu, by a Sibulan police team, headed by Senior Insp. Antonio Detuya, four days after the incident in Sibulan.

Police identified the suspects as Christopher Bagaan Nerona, 30, who admitted having stabbed and killed Myra Abrenica Gabato, 25, a graduating Business Administration student of SU; and Lelbe Bazar Mabanag, 37, who was allegedly responsible for tying up Melune Abrenica Gabato, younger sister of the fatality, in their apartment at Ablir Street, Barangay Poblacion, Sibulan.

The wives of the suspects are relatives of the victims, the police said.

The two suspects confessed to the crime before Senior Supt. Mariano Natuel Jr., director of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office, Sibulan Mayor Emmanuel Diputado, Poblacion Barangay Captain Dirkie Fontelo, and Gary Tabios of the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.

Nerona said he was the one who stabbed Myra, but he did not mean it, only that the victim resisted, and Mabanag admitted having hogtied the younger sister and banging her head in the wall, the police said.

The suspects were present when the sisters moved to the house owned by Pamela Jansen last October 26. They also visited the wake for Myra.

The two admitted having taken prohibited substance before committing the crime, but said the original plan was just to rob them, the police said.

Diputado said the cooperation of all concerned paid off, and resulted in the swift resolution of the case, and the municipality remains peaceful and orderly. He said the recent murder incident was an isolated case.

Natuel said murder and serious physical injuries charges will be filed against the suspects.*JG
