Jollygoodfellow Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I think the last part of the sentence about sums it up  either the devil was there or the kids just didn't want to go to school that day Students 'possessed' at school in the Philippines Fourteen students were possessed at a school in the Philippines according to "Unexplained Mysteries" and "The Freeman" on Nov. 21. The incident happened on Nov. 20 during the afternoon. It took place at the Toong Integrated School in the mountain barangay of Toong. Some of the students were taken to the Msgr. Frederick Kriekenbeek, who has done several exorcisms in the past at the Mary's Little Children Community in Tabunok, Talisay City. A response team from Cebu City were immediately dispatched and helped transport the children. Not everyone believes that it was a exorcism that was happening, Councilor Dave Tumulak believes that it was just mass hysteria. He wanted to schedule the day after a lecture on mass hysteria. Msgr. Joseph Tan, spokesperson of the Archdiocese of Cebu, shared his own thoughts on the case too. He told parents that they should be monitoring what their kids are watching and reading, because it's not uncommon for young people to be interested in these things. Though Tan like Tumulak also suggested that something else could have been the problem. He suggested that the kids should be seen by a medical doctor, to make sure that "stress" was not the problem either. A medical team that was there said that the children's pulse rates were regular after they were taken out of the school. A mass was done for the kids on Nov. 21 at the school's campus. So it's an odd occurrence that happened to these students in the Philippines, either the devil was there or the kids just didn't want to go to school that day. http://www.examiner.com/article/students-possessed-at-school-the-philippines

UnCheckedOther Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 Mental illness exacerbated by stress and overly religious upbringing? In undergrad, I took a Folklore and Mythology course where we had to record instances such as these. While I just compared and constrasted Western and Eastern f and m, my friend decided to debunk/find non-supernatural explanations for supernatural phenomena. I tagged along with her to an exorcism and a faith healing involving a Fil-Am arbulario. The latter was later proven to be a sleight of hand involving strips of bacon (!) and some fake blood---the arbulario "performed" surgery. As for the exorcism, it really looked like a psychotic break. I'm not a psychologist, but the exorcised boy came from a history of abuse, and I suppose the "devil" was one of his multiple personalities that was meant to be the stronger force to protect him from his existence. But yeah...the Philippines is prone to mass hysteria. Add in the oftentimes contradictory/pick and choose religious zeal that some Filipinos have, and boom! Exorcist. I really wish that mental health was treated and understood better in the Philippines. Sometimes it feels like it's easier to save face with religious possession than admit that your family/friend has a mental illness.
Forum Support Old55 Posted December 3, 2014 Forum Support Posted December 3, 2014 During my senior year we would sometimes go out on the weekend and "get possesed'. Never needed an exorcism only some munchies.
