Forum Support Old55 Posted December 26, 2014 Forum Support Posted December 26, 2014 MANILA, Philippines — The Fragile States Index sounded off the Philippines with a "very high warning" as it ranked 52nd most fragile country and 5th "most worsened." The study by the United Nations Foundation released earlier this year looked into 178 nations' level of stability and pressures they face based on millions of documents, data from 2013 and "comprehensive social science methodology." With 0 as the perfect score, the Philippines received an 85.1 score after an assessment of social and economic indicators such as uneven development, brain drain and poverty, as well as of political and military factors such as public services, human rights, factionalized elites and security. Rankings of "Most Worsened [states] for 2014." Fragile States Index 2013 Finland ranked last in the index with 18.7 as the most stable state, while South Sudan figured with an 112.9 score as the most fragile. "Weak and failing states pose a challenge to the international community," said the report edited by JJ Messner and assessment directed by Nate Haken. Headlines ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 "Pressures on one fragile state can have serious repercussions not only for that state and its people, but also for its neighbor and other states halfway across the globe," it added. The Philippines was found to have "worsened" since the 2013 index even as it slightly improved from 2012. Among the country's indicators that posed a downtrend the past year were those of demographic pressures, internal displacement, group grievance, public services, external intervention. The Philippines' security apparatus continued to worsen since 2008 while the economy somewhat carried over from 2013 with no significant gains. The Philippines' year-on-year data and trends. The scores should be interpreted with the understanding that the lower the score, the better. Therefore, a reduced score indicates an improvement, just as a higher score indicates greater instability. Human flight and brain drain remained to deteriorate since 2009, while uneven economic development also showed signs of improvement. The scores on human rights and rule of law and state legitimacy similarly improved. Gratefuled Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 It doesn't surprise me. Every time I pick up a newspaper or watch tv on a Philippine channel I see government officials being accused of all kinds of corruption. Same with much of the law enforcement officials and regular police officers. Most recently is the corruption in a certain prison with high ranking criminals living a life of luxury. There's more, I'm sure but this is what's in the news.
Popular Post Dave Hounddriver Posted December 27, 2014 Popular Post Posted December 27, 2014 Human flight and brain drain remained to deteriorate since 2009 This is the thing they could easily fix. There are many many people from other countries who perhaps 50 plus who would love to bring their 'brains' to the Philippines if they were allowed to work in their chosen field here and simply collect whatever salary the market will bear. Unfortunately there are many barriers to this. Perhaps the smart ones who should have been able to figure that out have already left the country.
Forum Support Popular Post scott h Posted December 27, 2014 Forum Support Popular Post Posted December 27, 2014 collect whatever salary the market will bear You know Dave I would do it for free. There is so much expertise just sitting under palm trees sipping San Magoo. That and we can still see the trees through the forest. I really think that the average Filipino is so used to the system as it is that they have really given up hope of changing. Funny example: Last week there was an editorial about Pemberton in the paper, an issue that really doesn't affect the day to day life of the folks. By the end of the day there were about 35 comments. The next day there was an editorial about traffic here in Manila, something that really does affect the quality of life.....2 comments. I really think Filipino pride would keep us from trying to help though. Any suggestion that we make is not taken as a suggestion on how to make things better. But as criticism by a "westerner" on their way of life. They don't realize that I live here too, I am not criticizing, I am trying to improve MY lifestyle. lo.lololol

My life style is pretty good now. A very Good Friend of mine ( here for over 30 years) said with much honesty straight from his heart, " they don't want us in person, but their lives have improved on the Western money, Western thoughts are not Welcome" Stopping the vote Rigging/Purchase would solve a lot of the problem, get rid of the Dynasties. JP :tiphat:
Forum Support scott h Posted December 27, 2014 Forum Support Posted December 27, 2014 (edited) Stopping the vote Rigging/Purchase You know Jack your friend was right on....I once made a joke to my wifes friends husband (so not a relative) who speaks very good English. I commented that everyone really looked forward to elections because they all go a new wardrobe (all those free t-shirts). He looked surprised and said "you figured that out already??" Jack Peterson Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 He looked surprised and said "you figured that our already??" Of course here lies half the problem, to most it is like a joke, then spend the next 4 years moaning like we can all do But then, they go again and re vote them in for a 2nd term. The Administrations through Schools, Colleges and Uni's just don't teach the Children to be individuals and think for themselves. They all become lemmings, Follow thigh Leader and be corrupted. In the real World, aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh whats the point of going on  they are not learning from their own mistakes let alone others. Soon be beer time Ahhhhhhhh! now that's my life improvement. Time and money to do it when I want. This annoys the Locals, Why? Cos I am a Foreigner, and I Can! Can they/You? NO? So who has the better life? Yet they tell you they have a good Life, Yeahhhhhh OK, well I will leave you to live yours and you leave me to live mine. Jack Peterson Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 I liken the UN in many respects like bad parents. They moan at this and they moan at that yet do nothing to put things right, Instead of coming out with just words they have a duty of care to all it's members. They have a mission Statement and have power to punish member States/Countries where the need arises. They don't, mainly because like most things in the World today, The Nanny state issue comes in. The UN are there for a reason, A referee if you like, For goodness sake UN, start Blowing the whistle instead of your own Trumpet ! I have put up a link to the UN and it's role in the World, I did this mainly so that those who were maybe unaware of just what it is all about can have a read, and get a little better understanding. http://www.cfr.org/international-organizations-and-alliances/role-un-general-assembly/p13490 JP :tiphat: I have no wish to offend at all but sometimes institutions should put their money where their mouth is.
Kuya John Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 (edited) When I first came to Philippines in 2000 , I was amazed what my £1.00 could buy. What I dont understand is why my £1 now gives me, 69-71peso,against 103 then. The cost of food and housing has doubled and on my last trip,I was left wondering how the Local's survive. Corruption is rife, from simple trans-actions, like queue jumping (expressing services) to local politics, to Government corruption. A recent documentary about Thailand and how they have repaired the damage created by the boxing day Tsunami, 10 years ago. showed real progress of the Country since that time. What has been done with all the Millions of Dollar's, Pounds etc sent to help the people of Philippines. I visited Leyte in May and saw no construction of homes for the homeless, Yes I did see individual homes being repaired,(presumable the privileged few ). Why dont the people let their voices be heard, and demand to know where the money went. Edited December 27, 2014 by Kuya John
