sonjack2847 Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 When I first came to Philippines in 2000 , I was amazed what my £1.00 could buy. What I dont understand is why my £1 now gives me, 69-71peso,against 103 then. The cost of food and housing has doubled and on my last trip,I was left wondering how the Local's survive. Corruption is rife, from simple trans-actions, like queue jumping (expressing services) to local politics, to Government corruption. A recent documentary about Thailand and how they have repaired the damage created by the boxing day Tsunami, 10 years ago. showed real progress of the Country since that time. What has been done with all the Millions of Dollar's, Pounds etc sent to help the people of Philippines. I visited Leyte in May and saw no construction of homes for the homeless, Yes I did see individual homes being repaired,(presumable the privileged few ). Why dont the people let their voices be heard, and demand to know where the money went. I have also seen the changes in Thailand but here life stands still and the beggars blame foreigners.

Forum Support Old55 Posted December 27, 2014 Author Forum Support Posted December 27, 2014 The average Filipino doesn't truly care about corruption because they are not unified as a country. Its every family for themselves, with little thought for tomorrow and if they can score a few hundred pesos every election so much the better. The best and brightest Filipinos depart Philippines as there are few opportunities for them. Many Filipinas gladly wed almost any Foreigner to have a better future. Those same old ruling families like things as they are and will keep it that way with help from the Church, corruption even murder. It seemed for awhile the government was starting to clean up its act. Frankly I think things will just get worse.
Jack Peterson Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Why dont the people let their voices be heard, and demand to know where the money went. Well John, we have here the early Nazi era of Germany, Inflation is raising at a rapid rate and there is no control, voicing ones Opinion and asking the Wrong Question and /or saying the Wrong thing to the wrong person at the wrong time seems to either get you ostracized, Arrested as a delinquent or in the extreme Shot. So the face thing Comes in and no one wants a Trouble maker in their midst so all are quiet. As with the ME, they have made their own bed now they must lay on it. the World has done it's best for these wonderful people and it has been Abused by those at the top to the detriment of All at the other End and it will continue to be Abused until Another catastrophe happens, Then we can sit back and see just what the rest of the worlds does. Old55, While I agree with most of what you have said, "With the help of the Church" Sorry I cant accept that. Yes there is corruption no doubt within the ranks of the hierachy, but from my knowledge the people on the ground, (pastor's priest's) do all they can to help those who are struggling, with the support of OSW's and Christians donations from around the World. When millions or was it billions of money was sent at the time of Yolanda, it was for the good of all, whatever their belief's. They call it Humanity, which is lacking in some people. Thomas Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Human flight and brain drain remained to deteriorate since 2009 This is the thing they could easily fix. There are many many people from other countries who perhaps 50 plus who would love to bring their 'brains' to the Philippines if they were allowed to work in their chosen field here and simply collect whatever salary the market will bear. Unfortunately there are many barriers to this. Perhaps the smart ones who should have been able to figure that out have already left the country. Yes. And SKIP the max 40 % business owning for many types of businesses, because not fun to pay 100 % of the investment and get only 40 %... :1 (103): I had an idea with a COMBINATION of supporting foreigners marry Filipinas, settle in underdeveloped provinces and start businesses or spread business knowledge anyhow else BUT the parlament idiots has stoped such GOOD promotion by counting it together with trafficing !!! so such (profesional organiced) promoting can give long JAIL time... :bash: He looked surprised and said "you figured that our already??" Of course here lies half the problem, to most it is like a joke, then spend the next 4 years moaning like we can all do But then, they go again and re vote them in for a 2nd term. The Administrations through Schools, Colleges and Uni's just don't teach the Children to be individuals and think for themselves. They all become lemmings, Follow thigh Leader and be corrupted. And the catholic church. It was similar in our home countries 100 years ago... :bash:

Concerning we get less for our currency now, it depend of Western economies are WORSE handled* than the SE Asian :) But less obvious in Phils. E g Thailand is catching up much faster than Phils. A Thai I know wasn't even impressed by Norwegian engineer salaries, but we Swedes are :hystery: * I don't remember when I said it first time, but sure sometimes before 2000 - The economy in the Western countries are "doomed" in the long run, because we can't send most of the PRODUCTS production abroad and finance the unballance by loaning... :1 (103): I DON'T believe the poor countries will pass us (at least not in my lifetime) BUT the poor countries will catch up MUCH of the difference. So our home countries will still have higher salaries BUT it's depressing to get REDUCED earning, while it's MOOD IMPROVING to get earning RAISE when it's lower than western salaries too... That's one of the reasons I plan to move from Sweden :) Why dont the people let their voices be heard, and demand to know where the money went. Yes. To get chance to improve it much, the PEOPLE need to protest HARD. Then them with power can't get rid of all of them protesting... (E g as Polish people did BEFORE Sovjet fell. By that they could develop much faster than average Eastern Europe back then. Now they have more rich people than Sweden have... :) And e g Sweden 100 years ago, when the poor protested and striked much, started OWN political party and TOOK the political power...)

Yes Thomas, I can agree with you here, The Philippine people could learn a lot from the efforts and Success of Lec Wallenska in Poland Certainly made the World Sit up and think That is the Difference and the Difference a Working man can make instead of the Silver Spooned Dynasty families.
