New Year fireworks and gunfire leave 354 injured in Philippines, hundreds less than previous years

The annual tide of injuries from New Year celebrations in the Philippines from fireworks and gunfire has left 354 people injured and more than a dozen requiring amputations.

Philippines health secretary Janette Garin said 14 amputations were performed this year, including a five-year-old boy who lost his hand.

Nevertheless, the toll dropped to the lowest in five years with 351 people hurt by fireworks and three hit by stray bullets in the last few days of 2014.

In 2013 celebrations, at least two people were killed and 793 others were left injured.

Authorities have repeatedly warned against the custom of welcoming the new year with indiscriminate fireworks and celebratory gunfire, which result in hundreds of injuries and fatalities every year.

Ms Garin said the health department's campaign against indiscriminate fireworks, and the passage of tropical storm Jiangmi which brought heavy rains to the central and southern islands, had brought down the injury toll.

Tropical storm Jiangmi exited the Philippines on Thursday, leaving at least 54 dead and 13 missing from floods and landslides.

It affected more than 120,000 people, more than 80,000 of whom were evacuated.

I saw this the other day online and for some reason found it a bit amusing.   :hystery:

GUN HAPPY PHILIPPINE POLICE WARNED

Acting National Police Chief Leonardo Espina has warned that police in the Philippines who fire their guns during normally raucous celebrations will lose their jobs. Thunderous fireworks and gunfire normally leave communities shrouded in smog and gun smoke, and result in hundreds of injuries every year, including even deaths, some due to stray bullets. Since the New Year celebration began Dec. 21 more than 160 people have been injured.

I hate to be so pessimistic but I think it has become harder to get the really good firecrackers and this had led to fewer injuries. Darwinism in reverse.

I wonder what will happen to the man who threw the firework. He said he never meant to throw at the motor bike but he should beheld accountable for his actions. Maybe if he is punished it might make other people think twice about where they throw fireworks.

Article in today's paper says the police will file a charge of Homicide against the man who threw the firecracker. I don't know why the police are filing the charge, most of the time the victim's family have to file. There are exceptions if the victim was an on-the-job government employee. Maybe because the child was 1 year? What a sad and senseless loss of life.

Jack is right. You can't fix stupid. But, I have to give credit where credit is due though. He did bring them to the hospital and then later surrended. Most would have disappeared to save face.

Sorry, I call Bs on the guy not aiming the firecracker. I think the only reason the news isn't doing likewise is the horrific effect of such stupidity
