Jollygoodfellow Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Sad story, anyone know him? A West Country man drowned saving his partner's 10-year-old son and their dog from a swollen river during a family holiday in the Philippines. Mark Selby, 45, was swimming with his partner Mary Anne Cruz and her two sons when the eldest boy was dragged into strong currents in the Balanac River. Mr Selby, a computer programmer from Stroud, in Gloucestershire, is said to have gone after the boy, who clung onto his shoulders until a lifeguard from a nearby resort plucked him from the water. Mr Selby – who is understood to have worked in Asia for a number of years – then went on to push their dog Molly towards the shore but was unable to swim back himself. His body was pulled from the water near Pagsanjan in Laguna shortly after the tragedy on December 29. A schoolfriend, who did not wish to be named, said: "This must have been an absolutely horrendous shock for his family. Mark was a good-looking chap, really fit and healthy. He was posting pictures of himself with his dog in the river the day before it happened. It's such a shock." Mr Selby is understood to have grown up in Gloucestershire before moving out to South East Asia, where he worked in Manila – around 50 miles from where he died. Writing on an online work profile, he said: "Away from the computer you will likely find me climbing volcanoes, riding horses, swimming, boat riding, cycling, cooking, scuba diving, sampling beer or sleeping." Local media said he was on holiday in the area and staying at the Villa Socorro Agri-Eco Village and Farm Resort when the accident happened. http://www.westerndailypress.co.uk/Man-dies-saving-boy-dog/story-25799985-detail/story.html
