davewe Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 All my questions drive my wife cray (crazier?). All the Filipinos I know are the least inquisitive people I have ever met. They are not dumb - just not inquisitive. I find them to be inquisitive - just not about the things that we in the West are inquisitive (or claim we are inquisitive) about. About liberal arts my wife has very little interest. How much that dress costs - she is quite inquisitive.
davewe Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 (edited) They are not dumb - just not inquisitive. Tuka you Jest No? Every and I mean Every time we go to another House see things or we meet friends, there is always that inquisitive question OH! How Much? Just realized, Jack, that we both wrote essentially the same thing. But honestly, I find Filipinos inquisitive about things they consider important: food, clothing and shelter, for example. Philosophy and history - not so much. Edited January 7, 2015 by davewe
Thomas Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Btw - I have started studying Cebuano. This week I have learned ONE new word :mocking: (Just joking. I will not start studying any Filipin language, before I know for sure where I will settle. But it's true I learned an important word. (asa? = where? ) Hi Thomas, Why Cebuano?.....if I was able to learn another language, I would go for Tagalog, which it is hope will become the National language. Filipinos here in UK use it, because they cannot understand each other, talking in their own dialect! ( and they dont want to speak English in front of their spouse/partner!).....regards JB Well. Tagalog (or more corect Filipino, which is similar) is - together with English - the OFFICIAL language, which many people with Visaya/Cebuano as main language are grumpy about, because almost as many have that as main language as Tagalog, so they don't like to talk Tagalog. And UNDEPENDING of that, I want to learn the LOCAL language, so I understand what they say about me :mocking:

Here in Iloilo I have been told to either learn Ilongo, or stick with English. They said if they can't speak to me in Ilongo they would rather speak English than Tagalog. Just because it is the "official" language does not make it popular. :tiphat:
Jack Peterson Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Just because it is the "official" language does not make it popular. Is it the Official Language? Many would Doubt/Argue this. I guess we all forget that TAGALOG is the Language of the Tagalog People and as such is mainly on Luzon, so many more will Speak it. In many cases from people I speak to Tagalogs are /were not always nice people. So their Dialect was not learned so people did not have to speak to them It is my Understanding from My SIL a Teacher, that the Official Filipino Language will be FILIPINO which is a Mixture of all the main Filipino Dialects, Schools in the Oriental DepEd Province no longer Teach Tagalog as a main language but FILIPINO. I am sure as many will agree, the Islands/ Provinces will never give up their local or larger dialects whatever the Official Language becomes. JMHO  JP :tiphat: :morning1: Morning All.
Kuya John Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 They said if they can't speak to me in Ilongo they would rather speak English than Tagalog. Well that's right in so far as, apart from local dialect, English is the main language at this present time. But think I am right to say Tagalog is what the Government would prefer as the National language.
JJReyes Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Philippine culture permits asking questions that would be considered taboo in the West. My wife was shocked when asked, "How much money does your husband make?" Her response, "That's absolutely none of your business." in turn shocked the person who asked the original question.
Dave Hounddriver Posted January 9, 2015 Author Posted January 9, 2015 Philippine culture permits asking questions that would be considered taboo in the West I know a few Americans who ask "How much do you have coming in each month" as one of the first questions they ask other expats. I think it is a regional thing in the US as not all Americans are that blunt. I usually give a different answer every time that question is asked so no one actually knows, except the people who follow my posts here religiously Mwah ha haaaaa.

Hahaha Dave, Just like myself, we bought a MPV( car ), and nearly everybody asked how old is it or how much did you pay for it. I refused to say how much, but gave different age ranging from almost new to 3 years old! ( not telling how old it is really  ) I find Filipino's most secretive, even to the point of pretending they never heard you, if you ask a question they dont want to answer! Yet in other ways their openess can shock or surprise you, like a friends wife openly discussing womens monthly's or asking out loud,a young lady if she was having her periods yet!!! Dont you just love them though :cheersty:

I believe what you write is the OFFICIAL version to try to CALM all people with OTHER main languages, but I don't think the others agree :) I know to few words to judge myself, but from what I have heared/read Filipino is in BIG parts SAME as Tagalog. I suppouse that's why many - inccluding Filipinos :) - don't bother/know to make difference between them. IIt is NOT many more having Tagalog as MAIN language. It's almost as many who have Visaya, which I suppouse make them EXTRA grumpy their language wasn't made official ALSO together with Filipino and ENGLISH. I suppouse that's why many Filipinos prefer English before Filipino/Tagalog. (In Sweden we have a bunch of official languages, although the other (4 ?) except Swedish are main language to VERY few people...)
