Methersgate Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 I may have said this before - an essential skill when dealing with the outlaws is to remember who has NOT told you what about whom... because you can be sure that you will get most of the family secrets told to you in short order...
Hey Steve Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 (edited) You can be sure if you go to the market/mall/drug store and a person that knows your wife/GF sees you exchanging pleasantries with the cute cashier lady that lasts more than 5 seconds, she's texting away her observations, so by the time you get home she already knows someone's dramatic version of you flirting-and God knows what else she adds. In the Philippines porch gossip (cheez meez) has started giving way to text gossip. It's gone high tech these days. Stay on your toes-you're being observed-lol :o :o :o Edited January 19, 2015 by Hey Steve

Popular Post manofthecoldland Posted April 12, 2015 Popular Post Posted April 12, 2015 As social group creatures who are interdependent....., gossip has always been an essential survival tool. Information exchange and manipulation are no stranger to any society. Its just in some... the stakes are higher. So it is here. It is a high art here, l take informal lessons by observing my wife behaviours with others. Later she often confides in me what is really going on in the undercurrents of the meta-language. She is very careful with her words and information control. I knew she was unusual in several ways when I met her, and time has proven that she has mastered her culture to a very high degree. She does not like exchanging chismis freely and does not like "showy people". I have learned much from her. Understatement and maintanance of personal privacy is the much wiser course of behaviour in her opinion. She keeps our candle hidden under the bushel because she knows how powerful envy and jealousy are in this society and how it can cause a cascade of problems for you if you are not careful. Once this posting clears, I will post a thread on an aspect of the culture here that intrigues me..... 'Being honest' and 'Speaking the truth'.
Petey Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 I have had people following me and then informing other family members of my where-abouts. Going to a local store for load to then be hit with a text message "OMG you spend P1000 on Load"! and thats before i get home. Bearing in mind i use the same sim for phone and internet does'nt take the sting out of the issue :1 (103): For the people that love gossip FaceBook and social media has made "washing your dirty laundy in public" a more public display.
expatpaulinmy Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 It's a perennial part of Filipino culture. The juicier the blind item is, the better! It also seems that getting involved with private matters is also deemed as a caring gesture :mocking:
