This is such a tragedy. Unsupervised children ages 6 to 10, not one knew how to swim.

"CEBU -- Four children drowned in a swimming pool in Sitio Lutao, Barangay Labangon, Tabogon, Cebu last Sunday night. They were identified as Mary Ann Montuerto Precillas, 10; her brother Ronel, six, their cousins Negene Montuerto, eight; and Neilyen Mandawe, eight. “Ang akong anak dili kahibawo molangoy (My daughter did not know how to swim),” said Negene’s father Eugene. The other victims’ parents also told police their children did not know how to swim.

Unsupervised

The victims were buried in the Catholic cemetery Monday afternoon. SPO1 Jesus Suan, Tabogon Police Station investigator, said Negene left her home around 5 p.m. The girl’s father Eugene did not know that she was with her cousins and that they went to the swimming pool in the house of Marive Subingsubing, who is out on vacation with her Australian husband. The house is not yet finished and it doesn’t have a perimeter fence. “I believe the children came in through the back of the house so no one would notice them,” said Suan in Cebuano.

Eugene said he started to get worried when Negene was not home by 5 p.m. “Ang mga silingan wa kahibawo (My neighbors did not know where she was),” he said. He and his brother-in-law later walked to Subingsubing’s house, which sits on a hill and is about 400 meters from his house. “Namasin lang ko kay wa man koy kapaingnan (I just wanted to see if she was there because there was nowhere else to go),” he said. When he got to the swimming pool, he trained his flashlight at the water. That was when he saw Negene and the other children floating.

No foul play

Eugene said Negene still had a pulse so he tried to revive her. “Miagulo siya. Mao na toy katapusan nakong dungog niya (She moaned. That was the last time I heard her),” he said.
The children were rushed to the Severo Verallo Memorial Hospital in Bogo City, where they were declared dead on arrival. Suan said they ruled out foul play because there were no signs that they were killed. He said no one was in Subingsubing’s house during the incident. (Sun.Star Cebu)

Unsupervised

How many times have we said here, It always takes a Tragedy, before people start to think of safety?

No foul play

Unfinished House No fences? Maybe No Intended 'Foul play' but most certainly ( In my Mind) Questionable Omissions from the Owners and Builders.

In with many Countries, Strict Safety and Security Measures are a Legal Obligation But here?......................................

Condolences to the Parents and family of these Children, Lets Hope a Lesson can be Learned from this Sad tale.

Sounds as if the kids took off on their own agender.

I believe the children came in through the back of the house so no one would notice them,

Sad tragedy indeed but makes you wonder how 4 kids who can't swim end up in a pool and all drowning. No way out? Did they drown trying to save each other?

Point taken, I have to Admit I had not looked at it that way. Another story to unfold? seems not, if all were deceased But were there others at large?

We shall see no doubt.

I admit I'm a very emotional guy and things like this really hits me hard! No child should ever lose their life like this regardless of why!

Sad story undeed.

As Tom says; something doesn't seem right here.

Last week at Alona at the Northland resort I was swimming in the unfenced pool, no lifeguard. A couple of German kids were in there unsupervised, both under 7. The little girl got into a bit of trouble in the deep end so I dragged her out (she wasn't getting out without assistance). With her clinging to my hip and crying I went looking for the parents. Found them relaxing with a beer on one of the upstairs terraces of the resort well out of view and a long way from the pool. I gave the sobbing child to her mother only to met with a torrent of abuse; this despite her brother backing up my story. Taking their guilt out on me? I explained all rhe usual water safety and kids stuff we're instilled with from birth in Australia.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Is the Philippines a litigious society or is there still a sense of personal responsibility unlike many countries in the West and the line of duty of care is becoming a little less clear? I would imagine that the owner or builder involved could've been up for a lot of PHP if PH does go the way we have.

For a country that lives on islands with water all around, very, very few people know how to swim let alone save a life. Swimming lessons should be a mandatory class in all schools instead of some of those useless benign courses that are used to fill up the years.

We lived on a farm bordering a river so my mother taught all of us to swim at a very early age.
