Ynot Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 Yep, your post caught my eye "Live Like a King"! I would love to live like a King, I have also built a house in Thailand probably 150 sqm in size not large by Australian standards, my current home in Australia is over 200 sqm, and Im not living like a king, yes I have space, but I must live on a budget so I can finance my trips to the Philippines. I watch my pennies because I want to be with my gf. I know that not in the too distant future I will be with my gf for good - 25 months and counting down. As to when I move to the Philippines will I be living like a king? Well that depends, I could have a small home because I cant afford to build a large house, perhaps 100 sqm in area, and to some of you that may be large to others it may be small, but even if it was only 30 sqm in size to some I could be viewed as living like a king, not just because of the size of the house, but because of my ability to buy food and perhaps shout myself a cup of coffee or drink a few beers. There are plenty of people out there that do not have home, that do not know where there next meal is coming from, so from their perspective we are all living like a king, You may be thinking your doing it rough, but put yourself in their shoes for a day and take a look around then. Then you will know who is really living like a king!!
Gratefuled Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 A man's home is his castle. His wife is Queen of the house.(castle). Treat her like a Queen and you'll be a very happy KING. I Love my wife and I am sure of her love for me. We have a very mature romantic marriage relationship.
Forum Support Popular Post Mike J Posted May 20, 2015 Forum Support Popular Post Posted May 20, 2015 So in the long run, when I die, I have left instructions that if they have a Filipino style viewing to lay me face down so when they all pass by before eating the food that I pay for, they can kiss my BUM. . That will also make it easier for them to get at your wallet.
canadamale Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Hopefully the wallet is empty by that time. Sent by a guy that just arrived back in Canada for work aaaaaarg. I did not win the 5/66 lotto so no living like a king and back to work. Some in the Philippines would think living in the work camp I will be at is living like a king. A nice house in the video, myself I would need a refrigerator and couch, my bed would be upstairs. Still it is a very nice place.
tomaw Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 (edited) Most of us has heard someone saying you can live like a king on xxxxx amount while over there in Thailand , Well first thing first its not Thailand i tell them, its the Philippines and no you cant live like a king on xxxx amount either, Who started this living like a king on half a crown and i bet it was years and years ago, but why do the fools who has never been east or maybe dont even know where it is still think you can live this way, Many people who know me and knows i have a house there thinks its a mansion with what it has cost, and when you say yes its cheap compared to here but its not as cheap as you think, In the end you try to avoid these people who only know where Europe starts and ends and Thailand is all Asia You are right. You can live here as cheap as the locals if you live like they do. Meaning, you eat like they do, live in small shacks like they do, do the things that they do, and do without the little conveniences that westerners are accustomed to.BUT, and it's a big BUT, if you want to live like you did in the states or UK, you have to pay. Little luxuries that you are accustomed to cost money. The entertainment you are accustomed to cost money. Imported groceries, branded clothing cost money. Nice housing, and utilities cost money. If you want to travel around the Philippines, that cost money as well. You're somewhat right. A nice western style home with utilities does cost money. However, it is not an everyday expense in the Philippines. In The Philippines I can get a nice lot in a gated subdivision, on a hill overlooking the ocean for about $16,000. The price of building the house of course will vary a lot depending on whether you want a nipa hut or a mansion. In The Philippines I can have a nice, middle class western style home and lot paid off in about 5 years. In California such a house and lot would be over or close to a million dollars and need a very large down payment and also $3000 - $4000 monthly payments for about 30 years! When it comes to groceries it depends not only on where you shop but what you're buying and where the item originally comes from. Saying apples cost more in the Philippines makes about as much sense as saying snowmobiles cost more in the Philippines! Neither are local products of the Philippines. Mike In Canada Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 What amount of money would one require to live like a king in the province if there were no rent or mortgage payment? This area is about 350 Km from Manila, no real bar areas to spend money in so the real expenses will be Hydro (aircon) gas, automobile, food, cell, internet, pool costs, maids, landscapers etc. Entertainment might be a golf membership and fishing. Im trying to figure how much I will need to have cash in the bank to retire by the age of 52.
Forum Support scott h Posted July 3, 2015 Forum Support Posted July 3, 2015 (edited) What amount of money would one require to live like a king in the province if there were no rent or mortgage payment? 350 Km from Manila More than most of us would ever have. Consider, inconsistent power, poor internet, lack of major malls and restaurants, lack of top notch medical facilities, no real access to imported goods (i.e. food fit for a king). So in my opinion you can live in the provinces like minor royalty very cheaply. But to live like a KING would be very expensive. :tiphat: Edited July 3, 2015 by scott h
Dave Hounddriver Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 What amount of money would one require to live like a king in the province It depends on how 'kingly' you want to live. I know 3 kings in Biliran province. The first king has a 1,000 meter lot with a nice house and a great family and some house helpers, 2 car garage - filled with 2 cars and drinks his fill of Pilsen whenever the mood strikes him. I suspect his budget is around US$2,500 a month and he lives like the king of his castle. To make this long story short, the second 'king' has a budget of about 3 times that amount (lets say US$7,500 a month), and operates a beautiful resort on the ocean. He is the king of the resort and you could say the king of his wife's family's barangay. The third king has income that must be close to US$25,000 a month. He lives like the king of the barangay. There are likely a few filipinos living in his city that are richer, but they do not flaunt it like he does. Somehow he has escaped all the problems of violent crime due to flaunting wealth and definitely lives like a king.

Him and many others were the first generation of Filipinos to retire from USN in 70's and 80's. I believe the phrase you can live like a king was first coined among those Filipino families returning back to the islands. Their lifetime military pension (dollar account) launched an unprecedented growth in the Philippine economy. In today's economy, I believe retirement communities (Asian, central America and eastern Europe) are becoming more attractive. The American dream (owning a home, 2 cars - etc, etc) does not necessarily mean living in the states anymore. As long as you have a dollar account, you can live anywhere. My two bit view.....(25 cents). Respectfully -- Jake
