Jack could you be so kind as to be a little more explicit, I am considering one for my partner. Does it have gears? From where did you buy and is it suitable for a 5 ft 6 Filipina?

What are the NAME BRAND Japanese bikes you guys recommend?

Guys Give me some time here please and I will tell you what I got and where from,  :hystery: Just a Little Stressed now, The Electric Company have Just Arrived to put me a new supply Pole up and they will turn me off I think when they do the Change overs. Hope the Lap Top is Charged enough to continue  AH! but wait they will have Snacks First, Who'd a Thunk that.

So 2nd hand Bikes or should I say Surplus? I have a Pallas from Japan which I got at a Surplus Supply place in Cebu but there is one in Dumaguete, the Location I cant Remember now but a Visit to Bernards Bikes  in Perdices street will have Directions but they also carry good Bikes at really good Prices. There main place in Pinili Street have a Good Stock and good Prices.

My daughter is 5'6 and she had no Problem with her "Rockhopper" Brand ( Not sure where that is from)

I am not up on Japanese or Chines Bicycles and Chris 49 is the best one for this.

All I can say is that I have been happy with my 2.500 p Purchase and has cost me little other than the things I mentioned before.

Her bike was 18.000 in Total and does many many K's a Week Very few Problems once all was sorted.

RBM a Visit to Bernards will be well worth a Visit i am sure.

@Russell I can't help you much as Cebu is not an Area I know, I got mine Via a friend who Happened to be in Cebu around the time I was Thinking about getting one.

As I say, Chris 49 is your man for Bikes, Just hope he picks up on this at some stage.

That's about all I can say just now on the Subject.

Jack

From my experience the cheap bikes in the US, are ok bikes.  The cheap bikes over here, are garbage.  I really wish I shipped my bike over here.  What I have seen that is worth riding is not worth the price.  Out where we are I have seen no 2nd hand market. They ride em until they fall apart, then they piece em together and keep riding.

Sorry Jack little confused here. Regarding the Japanese is that 6 speed and cost p2500, must be having senior moments as getting your bike and daughters mixed up.

If I could obtain a Japanese surplus around p3k with gears be great. I am often in Cebu and have often seem strange looking bikes in petrol stations, most have basket on front, perhaps this is what your referring to.

US Brands. Cannondale, Trek, Merida, Fuji, Mongoose** Specialized, (Euro Brand()all made in Taiwan. 16-24 speed, generic alloy frames, but branded, they are all made in Taiwan and they all run 14-16k pesos. They are good, but a 14k bike does not used top of the line components. They will use a lower grade of Shimano component which will tend to break, the way I ride. 1-2 year lifespan. They are good bikes and would last any recreational rider a lifetime with moderate use.

**Rockhopper is a model of?? Specialised I think. Or a line of the Specialised brand Can't say right now if it's a sub brand or a model. I think a separate line made by Specilised, typically will have eye catching designs and paint works..same basic bikes.

Same brands as above also do make models in China. Priced less but built cheaper and are heavier. Not highly recommended due to safety issues. Imagine descending and building up speed and you have no confidence in the bike. They are ok for kids.

Japanese surplus bikes are made of steel. At one time they were state of the art but are currently out of date. However they are classics, collectors items and a restored Japanese original bike has a value on the 2nd hand market. If cared for and not rusted out they last forever.I had the pleasure to ride one and they are very safe and give a comfortable ride. Getting replacement parts and components might be an issue, unless changing the whole bike to Shimano components, that can be expensive. They stopped manufacturing quite a long time ago except for 1-2 companies who continued, but they also packed up.

USA branded bikes bought in USA are also made in Taiwan on close inspection. There is no difference in buying a Cannondale original bike here or in the USA. They are like Mc Donalds or Toyota and the prices are scaled accordingly. The dealer mark up in the USA is more. But every year in the USA the dealer brings in new models and the old ones are discounted. They don't do that here. A bike is a bike and it is just sold on. Sales in Cartimar Quiapo are extremely brisk.

Whoever above said 5'6". That would be a 26" frame, the smallest. And the frame comes also Small-Medium-Large. Probably a 26" Small. Small means the length from the saddle to the handlebars, 26" means the height.

Plenty of Bikes for all sizes. They are adjustable you know My Wife is only 5'1' and she rides both Bikes ( one at time of Course.)

Taking my Saddle right down is just right, Adjusting it it right up is just about Good for me. A lot of it depends of Course on the Length of the Legs as I am sure Chris would Agree. I have a long Back so I can suffer a little but our Ladies have short legs and Upper Body so I can't really see any Problem, Maybe Chris can advise on the Size for your Wife. But to me if it is an of the Shelf Job then it can be done OK on Seat/ saddle Adjustment.

Off the shelf. 26" Small. My wife is around that size, she goes ok on my old 26 'er, Large Frame. Be better on a small but she can ride it ok.

I.m 5'7-8 I go alright on a 29 er Small. That helps me sit up front over the pedals in racing position.

Almost any bike can be adjusted, 26 er is the smallest, should be fine.

Bill Walton ex NBA great (have you heard of him) rode a custom built 29 er....the only difference was he got amuch higher seat because he's 7 ft tall. Same bike, height adjusted.
