Here is my opinion  a place to stay on Mactan -WIFI in room AC-hot showers - - - I don't care much for Mactan but I really do enjoy the convenience of the Airport Waterfront Hotel when arriving late after a long flight and heading out the next morning. A bit dated, but they actually have rooms with a bathtub. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Nice to soak after a long flight. Just walk across the street from the arrival area, up the stairs and you see it in front of you. The porter will bring your bags but they don't like to walk so they want a couple hundred pesos to bring your bags that far. Best places to meet Expats - - - in Dumaguete I would start with anywhere along the boulevard. Any restaurant that catches your fancy and serves beer will have some like minded foreigners. Or catch up with some of us locals if we are available when you arrive. Finding a trust worthy rental agent ? - - - There is no such thing. Legwork, referrals, checking the classifieds and asking locals is the way to do it. Anyone calling themselves a rental agent is just someone trying to get a middleman commission for telling you things you already know.
Guy F. Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 In Tagbilaran the Vest Pension House is an excellent value which is safe & secure. You can stay at Vest and pay day use fee at any of the resorts if you want the beach experience. Bohol Tropics is a decent value. I highly recommend Bohol Beach Club on Panglao for a 5 star experience at a 3 star price. Don't miss The Buzzz Cafe. It has 3 locations- the original at the Bohol Bee Farm, one at Island City Mall, and another at Alona Beach.
earthdome Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 Is it safe to leave my computer in my room or do i carry it with me ? If your room has a good safe, then yes. If not then check to see if the hotel has a safe. Otherwise bring your laptop in a backpack.

Guy F. Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 (edited) Many hotels in the PI have been graced by my presence and nothing has ever gone missing from my room. Of course ymmv. The Waterfront hotel is aging but elegant, and the rooms are quiet. The buffet breakfast is excellent. Edited July 7, 2015 by Guy F.

I would say the same except that I am superstitious enough to believe that saying it would make it happen.

I'd err on the side of caution and carry the obvious valuables with you. Yeah it's a pain, but I'm the sort of guy that carries his wallet in his front pocket when I'm there (false sense of security?).
Guy F. Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 When in the PI I carry a decoy billfold containing very little, in a pocket. The important items and most of the money are under my shirt in a travel wallet suspended from my neck with a cord the thickness of a shoelace.
