As far as what magic number you'll need - that will depend all on you and want. For a modest living I would suggest a short distance from the major part of an urban center, as rents will drop off dramatically. Don't trust internet searches for pricing unless you are OK with being fleeced.

As far as medical there are many options like BC/BS international, Phil Health, etc. Simply paying cash for services is often an option, as in many cases the cost of treatment may be dirt cheap compared to the West.

If you object to a girl staking her claim - brother you picked the wrong country! LOL

Thankyou everyone, I've read all the wise words offered, and if anything I couldn't see the woods for the trees, of course i'll survive, if i cut my cloth accordingly!

My next door neighbours have had their cottage on the market for 12 months now, and it's not sold, (and I honestly think it's better than mine). So when the time comes, I'll rent mine to some-one trustworthy, if that person really exists, and just book a flight, pack a bag & head over, for however long i'm permitted. I'll see where my journey takes me - you never know, I might hate the place, my rose tinted spectacles and fond memories may just be that, but I know deep down I'm going to love it, and all it throws at me!

Something to look forward to  . . . . .

In UK (?)     Prices are CRAZY high there at the countryside compared to most parts of Europe.

My neighbours have just reduced their price from £250k to £230k, it's an absolute bargain!

We're not really countryside, but our cottages were built in 1740, and are very different from what is being built today.

Hello No Duff,

We fully understand your apprehension about going into unknown culture and territory.  But with your police background, you've been trained to read both verbal and body language and should be able to discern who are your true friends.  Keep your personal income and background low keyed and as always watch your six, especially around a few expats that you will eventually meet up.

Respectfully -- Jake

More than the price ND says as it would be a specialised building project

They don`t know exactly when my place was built but around 1900 yes mate lots of character. But a booger to paint all the spindles on the stairs.
