Dengue Fever

On a side note, we also have Japanese encephalitis which is also carried by misquitos, however the good thing is it rare, the bad thing it is more nasty then Dengue. However, some good news for kano patients, most medical professionals believe if you have had your MMR when you were young, you should be immune to this virus...however you never know. If I worked around pigs and other livestock in the tropics, I still would double down on the OFF.

There is a vaccine for JEV (a series of 3 shots over several weeks). When I was deployed in the south, the military required us to get this.

I was lucky (?!) enough to get Dengue Fever while at Camiguin Island 3 years ago.  Basically, my summary is:

  • Takes up to 7 days to feel the effects
  • Fever, hot & cold sweats
  • Not feeling like eating or drinking (wanting to vomit)
  • Getting dehydrated is the issue - kidneys fail
  • Because I have a bit of weight, not eating or drinking for a few days knocked me around, but I didn't need treatment
  • Thinner people (read: most filipinos) need to get on a drip to get fluids back into the body

I have read that if I get it a second time it can be worse, so I have to be a bit more aware.

Also, if you get a secondary infection (or something other than Dengue, at the same time) it can be alot worse.

I went to my dermatologist a few weeks ago for a followup visit on previous work done.  As an aside, I told him I had had a "heat rash" about a month before.  I had a red spots, mostly on my neck and upper body, that were itchy and some became bloody from my scratching.  I did some research on the internet that made me think it was heat rash.  Looked very similar to all the pictures I found.  I bought some powder they have here and it slowly faded away.  I don't think the powder cured it but it helps keep you dry.

The doc said it was possible I had a strain of dengue.   He said there are 4 strains around the Philippines.  I never noted that I had a fever, or other symptoms, just this rash.  Has anyone heard of these symptoms for dengue?

Yes, my daughter had a rash on the legs with a few sores breaking out. We were told to watch her closely, but nothing came of it. Apparently it's a secondary sign of Dengue. We were thinking of a vitamin deficiency, eg Vit C, so we treated her. The rash went away, but we still don't know what it was.

Impetigo is also very prevalent in the provinces. Rash with few sores breaking out sounds like the beginining of an episode.

A lot of the people here need  to read the story of peter and the wolf. The problem you have Steve is whether it is true or not Send some money as a one -off payment and ask to see doctors reports then if they don`t show you any next time you can say a big fat NO.

I really agree, in that admission for suspected Dengue in a government hospital, for an observation period of a few days is not going to cost much. But if referred to a Medical Center they would need money in hand.

I had the same thing, went to the local Pharmacy and they gave me some satchels of Calmoseptine, only used one and the rash was gone in a few days never to return

What if blister starts to appear on the scalp? rather than the usual torso, arms and legs. is it possible that it can be a bullous impetigo? child is 1 year old.

Thanks.
