bows00 Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I know this topic has been addressed... many times... but I need a kick in the butt... so here is my story... It all started with a friendly conversation with a friend in a bar, after a few drinks, he asked "so what gets you up in the morning?" And i couldn't come up with a half decent answer other than it is what I do... i go to work... for money... at 54, how pathetic is that? I have no wife, no kids, but yes, I am married... TO MY JOB!! I have been a mechanical engineer for the Navy for 31 years... although I take pride in my work, I have always felt that it has never been my calling to me an engineer. I am in it for the money. I am struggling with leaving a $100K per year job and retire with a measly pension to start my second life there... This website has been an inspiration to pursue my next life there, but I am still struggling to make that jump... so again, please do some butt kicking here... mine!!
Popular Post Dave Hounddriver Posted December 9, 2015 Popular Post Posted December 9, 2015 (edited) I am going to tell you that this life is not for everyone and you may be one of the guys who are not yet ready. Tom (not 'our' Tom but a friend I know) came to the Philippines when I came here. He tried it for a few years, same as I did, on a low budget, much like I am on now. For the last 5 years he has been back in the USA driving a truck. He has a pension and any time he wants to come here and live on $1,000 US a month he can do that. But its not enough for him. He is not willing to do what it takes to live on what he has so he chooses to chase that almighty buck until he has 'enough'. I fear he will never have enough but it seems to make him happier chasing that 'buck' than coming here and chasing 'does'. So as I said, this life is not for everyone and you have a choice. Home owner or renting? How about vacation time or even some longer leaves without pay? Define measly pension. Plus any savings you might have....or lump sum gratuity? Most of us will have a hard time relating to your situation. More details if you want more input. Or simply get over here, I'm sure a few of us don't mind to meet you depending on location.

stevewool Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I hear you, and its hard to think leaving security, something you have known for years and somewhere SAFE too, But there comes a time to say sod it and go, My pensions are crap and i am too young to draw my state pension, that is why i am still here working hard saving harder so i can take the leap before the nine years i have to wait for the said pension, Only you can decide where it suits yourself , many can help
Popular Post Kuya John Posted December 9, 2015 Popular Post Posted December 9, 2015 Hmmmm, Time and tide wait for no man...... Provided you have sufficient funds and reasonable good health nothing to lose, however the longer you wait the more other factors come into the decision. You don't want to look back and wish that had done it earlier so get off your butt before it gets to sore.
Popular Post Jollygoodfellow Posted December 9, 2015 Popular Post Posted December 9, 2015 I am in it for the money. Personal opinion is your about my age with a job that pays much more than I could ever earn. If I was you I would leave your job very soon and try the Phils, try lots of things and if you still cant find what you're looking for you are still young enough to find work in the private sector if need be. I scratch my head every day trying to figure out a way to move but in my case I dont have the funds but it seems you should so why wait till you get to a point that old age is creeping up when it's possible to start a new adventure before the aches and pains set in. You said you need a kick, :buttkick: Just do it.
jpbago Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Maybe a mail order bride from the Philippines would be the way to go. Nothing wrong with living in Hawaii. Jake is your neighbor.
chris49 Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 at 54, how pathetic is that? I have no wife, no kids I can only ask you what's holding you back? 54 is not that old, but 65 or older will be more difficult. Delayed gratification doesn't work. But then on $100k, why aren't you hooked up in Hawaii?
