Eddie1 Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Well, if you had prearranged a time or you can send an inexpensive text message to agree a time, just Skype them, most people have a tablet or phone with Skype, plus the added bonus is you get to see the person you are Skyping with. Thank goodness for Skype, totally free and most of us depend on it.

We had a lot of coordination to do. We used UPS and sent a magic jack to my sister in law. Free calls (except for the magic jack set up fee). We now use the same magic jack to call the states for free.
Tukaram (Tim) Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 (edited) My MagicJack dongle quit working over a year ago, but with the new app I do not need it. You can set up an account and use an Android app (probably Apple as well?). Now, anytime I have a wifi connection I can call the US - or they can call me. It also works for text to/from the US. BobP Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Viber can be used on cell phones. Don't know about land lines. Download app online on cell and computer. You can try What's App. Also download online.

Whatever minutes you buy never expire either. Sometimes the Viber was less than quality due to poor wifi at the other end. Of course nothing helped with the construction going on next door in the Philippines.
MikeSwede Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 (edited) No worty voip provider in the area? Most new phones allow for adding a second virtual number to be used for online calls. And very few phonedata providers block such traffic, even if they block skype and its equivalents. If there is a need, I could mould something together and talk to the gods of this site and we set up something useful. VoIP uses a very limited amount of data, btw.
