I do know some expats that are looking for other countries already, just in case.  Also, I have had a few locals ask me if I am leaving because of him.

To me, I really think we (the Foreigner) are worrying too much at this time. We have been here before with new Presidents, those of us that have been here for previous Administration changes know that without us they are on thin Ice coupled with the OFW programmes around the World, anyone in their right mind would not want to Upset Western Countries too much, The PI really does need the long nose more than some will Admit.

No! in my estimation. The Hot air will cool down when he sits in the Palace and realizes he is only the President.

IMVHO

Yep, "wait and see mode" here too.  I'm excited about any noise pollution ordinances, especially a fireworks ban.  And wife is obviously happy about potentially getting a 100% raise with her teaching job.  But the issue that concerns me is the patriotic, nationalistic fervor that he evokes in the masses.   It will only take one sound bite of this loose cannon saying anything derogatory about expats before it's open season on us.  Most Filipinos already view us in an opportunistic manner and tolerate us as potential benefactors, but I can envision a Duterte Philippines where the xenophobia and discrimination is much worse. I'm not being negative here, just realistic.  And I hope I'm wrong.

Yes, I wonder about the nationalistic attitude as well. I am in a few Filipino Facebook Groups and some of his vocal supporters there are fired up for major social change... most of which I do not expect to happen.

With Duarte now the new President, and he vowing to be a Dictator, how does that do with safety for expat's? Is all of that just saber rattling. But with his Death Squads in Daveo  or at least the hint that.s true. Do you see a coup coming? Or more such truth of Death Squads the bigger cities too. Just wondering. Thanks.Mark

Mark,

I think we have to wait and see.  I do not think he is going to be a limp d..k President that is for sure, but that is why he won the election.  The people wanted something different and now they have it.

I doubt it will affect expats at all (unless they do armed hold ups or sell drugs).  My personal view is that if he does what he is promising, at least we will get rid of some s..t bags in the Philippines, that has got to be a good thing.

I believe that the poor and under priviledged see him somewhat as a saviour!  This is something that is starting to rise up  not only in Phils but all over the world.  The down trodden are sick of being the can, in the 'kick the can competition'.  I am a long way from a socialist or a communist, but I am all for social equality and fairness.

If Duterte ends up like 99.5%  of all politicians, they promise the world and deliver a cup of tea and biscuits. Now I have to admit, he is the most likely to be in that .5% of all the ones I have seen lately (except for the ratbags in Sth Africa).

Again wait and see is the only option.  But it will be interesting, just as it is here with the military.

Good question.

I guess it all remains to be seen. Just like any other newly elected president. I would venture to say that any expats in the PI better be on their best behavior. We know how corrupt the cops are in extorting money.

Many do not remember last year Duterte warned immigration about harassing ,extorting foreigners in Davao city. Hopefully his stance is the same as President.

Duterte warns immigration agents against harassing foreigners in Davao City

DAVAO CITY - Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on Monday  said he will personally arrest agents of the Bureau of immigration (BI) if they continue to harass and extort money from foreigners living and doing business in Davao City.

The mayor issued the warning following complaints from Indian medical students that BI agents are harassing some of them, even asking money of up to P5,000.

While he has no proof of the allegations, Duterte said it was not the first time he heard about these activities involving BI agents. In the past, he said, this was already a practice.

Duterte also asked the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to immediately investigate the matter and submit a report by Wednesday, January 14. The mayor also wants CIDG to investigate Dr. Ashin Mohan, who was also accused by the Indian students of harassing them.

If there is truth that there was money involved, Duterte said, it becomes a crime of extortion or robbery.

“I hope it stops. Lay off!” he said.

Duterte urged the bureau to exercise transparency in dealing with foreigners, regardless of whether they are Indians, Chinese, Koreans, and Indonesians.

“If you want something out of the aliens, send somebody to advise them to go to your office. You to do it the proper way: invite them to your office in open view (of everyone). Do not investigate nga kamo lang naa sa kwarto (that you are the only ones in the room),” he said, adding that other government agencies such as the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and the Bureau of Customs (BoC) should follow suit.

“Better stop if that is the practice. I would insist on what is right and legal,” he added.

The mayor emphasized that Davao City is progressing and many investors are opening their businesses in the city. “Ayaw ninyo guba-a (Do not ruin it). Do not be an obstacle or hinder the progress of the city by giving it a bad image,” he stressed.

Duterte said the city government has worked its way to improve the city so that even New People’s Army (NPA) rebels have distanced themselves and have tried to avoid fighting within Davao area. Likewise, the city’s good relations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) have helped the city become what it is today.

Except for those who may be fugitives from justice, the harassed Indian students have immigration documents, Duterte said.

The mayor also urged businessmen to do business in the city legally. “Kung dili mo motuo sa balaod either pahawa mo (If you do not obey leave the city) or you render yourself being prosecuted,” Duterte warned.

What I am seeing from most of my Filipino friends are good posts about him saying he will stop the 5/6 loans, and bad posts about the possible 1 AM drinking ban. You tell folks when to drink and they all become freedom fighters ha ha  :tiphat:

Well I would properly say being a law and order guy, not knowing the politics of the P.I. That might get some folks riled up. Not a drinker myself, maybe a 2 or 4 am ban on drinking might be better.Thanks.Mark

I guess the wait and see is with all politicians, he talks big, but I do believe some of the things he said hes done, hes done. I wish he would raise the quota from 50 to say 100 on immigration. I don't see him allowing migrants from Syria or any Muslims being allowed to come there. at 5% Muslims there already and a 3rd world country, The P.I. can't do it. With the new us bases being opened up there, I wonder where he stands on that. Like you said wait and see.Thanks.Mark
