We have been here before with new Presidents, those of us that have been here for previous Administration changes know that without us they are on thin Ice coupled with the OFW programmes around the World, anyone in their right mind would not want to Upset Western Countries too much, The PI really does need the long nose more than some will Admit. No! in my estimation. The Hot air will cool down when he sits in the Palace and realizes he is only the President. IMVHO Jack Morning All ( Errr this is a very Large hangover Coffee.) Like closing the bars at 1 am... Why? How many of us know an alcoholic Filipino who sends his wife out to work, drinks all night spending the little money she earns, has the family living in a squattor's hut because there is no more money, kids aren't in school because he's passed out while the wife is working... Besides the fact he drank the money for school... That is why the 1 am cut off... So these people have time to go home, sleep, sober up, and go to work.. Closing bars also means less jobs. Discos as they still call them employ people and the younger generation has the right to enjoy their nights out. 1am is when these discos/nightclubs come alive. You start closing drinking establishments people will be out of work, drinking curfews would mean casinos, bars, sports bars, night clubs, restaurants with live entertainment, girly bars, tourisam on Boracay, the list goes on. Business will close up if you take away their income and the staff go with it. But what about the Filipino culture? Sing, dance and the right to do as one wants as long as it's within the law. A lot of members here are past the days of a night out on the town but if this curfew come to fruition what about the younger ones (18+) who have to be tucked up in bed because someone took away the right to decide when they have had enough to drink and what time they can drink it. As for the alcoholic Filipino in Bob's quote, do you think they will stop drinking at 1am? Why would they, an alcoholic is an alcoholic so will drink the same as always.

I would wager that exceptions and waivers will abound (read an article about some already). 39 minutes ago, Jollygoodfellow said: But what about the Filipino culture? What I get a chuckle about is there have been many, many comments over the years about "when will the Philippines join the modern world" whether it be in education, business, calling for designated bus stops, you name it. But once a suggestion is made, the uproar caused is deafening.

I think there will be as in very trendy Timog Ave and similar area Metro Walk have so many up market joints all serving food. As already mentioned what is the definition of a bar? And how about the thousand's of unlicenced joints across the country, many at local barangay level.

mogo51 Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 JGF makes a good point about younger drinkers, who seem to get started about 10pm plus whereas, we old farts used to go out at 7pm and be home by 11pm. Still recent changes in many areas in Oz such as Fortitude Valley, Kings Cross etc. closing bars at 3am has seen a large decrease of violence in those areas. Maybe 1am is a bit early, but perhaps some tweeking of the laws may be needed.

Can't talk much about Others but for me, Bar closing times are of no consequence to me really, I Don't get the Aggravation from the louts and because of my Drinking habits and times, I rarely see the problems that arise. I am not a late night Dinker in Town or local bars that are handy for my Area, I have my Limits and try very hard to stick to them. Since 40+ I have enjoyed my lunchtime and early Beer and have my limits, I take what I know will be enough for my intake Depending on the bar I will go to When the money has gone it is time to go Home. If I reach my Intake amount prior to that then it is still time to go home. Our Lunch meets are usually 2/3 hours and Like most Responsible Drinkers we know when we have had enough. I tend to think that the problem lies where Some just need to go out early and are still there at Closing, Way beyond there Limits both in Quantity and Monetary limits. Personally I see nothing wrong with anyone going out after work at say 9/9.30 for a couple of hours to enjoy the last part of their day which is what socializing is all about. It is this sort or Person that will be hard hit if bars are going to be shut Too early. We don't live in a perfect world anywhere on this planet and we can't please all the people all the time but surely we must try and please most. I Remember some years ago in the UK where pubs (Bars) around Mines and Steel Works would Open at 5.30 am to cater for the Night Shift coming Off so that they could enjoy a Pint (Beer) I mean it is the End of their working day. We will never stop the Idiots That want to Drink the whole night but having said that, I do feel that landlords (Bar Owners and senior Staff on Duty) Should be made more Responsible for Serving Alcohol to those that are Clearly under the weather. As a drinker, I think This Topic could go on for ever but to me, it is not being tackled in the right way, Not so many years ago the UK went from a Morning & Afternoon session to All day opening, Followed by all hours licensing. Problems were lessened in many parts of the Country but owners and Operators were under the watchful eye of magistrates for license renewal where too many problems occurred. To Finish I still and will always feel that owners and Operators must take a more active part in the proper running of the bar and not just the cash register. Go find an empty field, vacant lot or a house where the parents are gone. An just take their chances with the cops. Worked for me and I turned out ok........well sort of

If you are in the bar you can stay to 5am but you can not get into the bars after 3am. The thing is in my limited experience of being out late in Mango ave Cebu is I can not recall seeing anyone over intoxicated except for me. Seriously I have visited the nightclubs and did not see any drunks, out on the streets I did not see drunks or fights. Could be that it was going on and I didn't know about it considering one time I got into a taxi in Mango ave where about a million people were shouting taxi and trying for a tip even though there were tons of taxis waiting, I tell the driver to drive off and then notice there is a girl in the front seat who slipped in amongst the mayhem. After a shouting match and the driver finally telling her to get out she left so like I say, maybe I did not notice what is going on.
mogo51 Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 (edited) All night drinking is still a major issue in Brisbane, same in Sydney and I would expect Melbourne etc. Whether they are locked out or are closed, the push is for shorter opening hours. As an ex publican myself, I see no great benefit in all night drinking, other than for the full blown drunks. If you have not had enough by 2am or 3am, you never will IMO.
