Here's an article I was hoping not to see. Has me wondering if perhaps living here in the islands was the right choice and how long we dare stay?

Duterte wants friendly ties with China; okays direct talks...

IMHO I see nothing ominous about Duterte wanting direct talks with China.  There are a lot of Chinese Filpinos in this country and maybe they can work something out.  Any filipino squatter will tell you that you cannot own property that you cannot defend from other people who want to occupy it so its not a foreign concept to the Philippines for someone to come in and take over land that does not belong o them (Spratleys for example).

In fact, Canada is a socialist country with direct ties to China and I don't find that scary either, for now.

I'm not sure really. My thinking is that someone sold out the store for that 30 pieces of silver. True, there a lot of Filipino Chinese in the country and the amount has greatly increased over the last 10 or 12 years.

Prior to the start of WW11 there was a large amount of Japanese Filipinos too. They were mostly business owners, married to locals and seemed like good, decent people -- until the day Japan attacked. Then these same well respected Japanese Filipinos came out or their homes and businesses wearing their Japanese army uniforms and killed anyone and everyone they could. History repeating itself? Quite possibly so and I have little trust in human nature or inept leaders that would want to boost their own ego an bank accounts.

Well the Chinese like golf and red wine so what is there to worry about? I can't speak Mandarin but then I can't speak any of the Filipino languages either so no change there. I'll get my former college David Zhu (aka Fu Manchu) to intercede for me in the event of any problems........

I don't know about China proper, but Hong Kong had the worst street food I have seen anywhere.
