Clermont Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 Thanks, Gary & Jack, I've already be blooded when we payed to fix the ancestral home up for my wife's family. Queried why it would take 5 days for 2 builders and 2 labours to put 2 door jams in and swing the doors, photo followed and no more argument from me. Half bricks not used to make the door jams flush, thus the half brick gaps had to be cemented in bit by bit, I still smile at there response, "it is how we always do it," And i believe that they sight the walls by eye, taking plenty of string line over with me, ha ha.

I forgot to mention, it will be a condominium construction not a two story building. My wife and I are in our 60 's, climbing stairs leaves no energy for other activities. At least you have your priorities right!
Steve GCC Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 It would surely depend on distances between your columns and what would be on upper floor, unless a Bungalow. Agree they cant lay blocks worth a damn and look like a pile of Sh!te!!!!! But by golly they can render and then use copious amounts of filler and paint to flatten it all up.

It's an optical illusion Ron, if you look at it through the bottom of a beer mug it's perfectly straight. 6

Not strictly true, I agree that most block work is shoddy because it is usually cemented over to hide hideous workmanship. However, my house is built in clay blocks with good joint spacing and neat pointing. It had to be done well because the block work is exposed both inside and out with just clear slate finish painted over for waterproofing. I do admit that I showed them how I wanted it done and was very strict about it. Here are some interior and exterior shots. I think you will agree that they did a good job considering it was their first time to build in such a way with these materials.
