Dave Hounddriver Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 Some of us long term expats want to head back to North America for a visit once in a while. The price for a return ticket from Philippines to North America and back is often different from the price leaving from North America. One of the best prices I can find is with Korean Airlines. I noticed a post about them from one of our members last year: On 8/19/2015 at 8:41 PM, WordsandMusic said: Korean Airlines, the only way to go for me. Always spotless clean and the best service in the air! They work like little robots to make sure you're comfortable. I have had a least six friends go to the Philippines after my first trip and I told them all to go LAX and then Korean Airlines. They still talk about how good that airline is. four of them have made multiple trips to Philippines and only go Korean airlines. Even when the prices are little higher you just can't beat the service, it's consistent and reliable. Not to mention the Airport is spotless and very safe. You can take a shower there which I always do. Then you only have a 4.5-5.0 hour flight into Cebu. So my question is about the ICN airport in Korea. The flight with Korean Airlines from Cebu leaves at 1 am and arrives at ICN at 7 in the morning. Then there is a 11 hour layover before leaving at 6 PM. What facilities are there to have a sleep or find something to do with myself for 11 hours? Apart from Korean Airlines, what other 'best price' airlines have people used? (Best price in this case means about US$ 750 for a return flight from Cebu to Seattle or Vancouver in late September or early October)

I have had long layovers there a few times. There is a rest area on the second floor for relaxation, just follow the signs. It is very quiet and there are reclining seats that are so comfortable that I have actually slept uninterrupted for 5 or 6 hours on them. If you arrive a 7 am you should have no problem find one of the reclining seats or another place where you can actually lay down and sleep. Forum Support Old55 Posted July 22, 2016 Forum Support Posted July 22, 2016 I have flown Asiana, SEA to CEB and return. My first choice, it's cheap good service and food. The return layover is 11 or 12 hours. During the lay over you have a choice a free hotel or a free tour. You must ask your travel agent to apply for the tour/hotel ticket. In our case no extra cost YMMV. I like the hotel, nice and clean with total blackout window covers. A shuttle bus ten minute ride from airport. Sleep eight hours walk around eat get a massage then back to airport. It reduces jet lag in my case.
Gratefuled Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 Philippine Airlines is still my choice from Manila to LA.

Failing that, can you recommend an online travel agent who could arrange the free hotel? EDIT: I am waiting for a response on my email to the airline but in the meantime I found a decent hotel for day use for just under 50 bucks. Quite reasonable. So I want to ask if Canadians or Americans need any kind of visa to leave the airport. In the past that would seem a silly question. Nowadays, even Aussies going to Canada or Canadians going to Aus need an online visa, and we are practically cousins. Its not a big deal and I suspect its just a money maker but I'd like to know if South Korea has anything like that. I have been afraid to try them for a long distance flight as I have heard more horror stories than pleasant experiences, except for those using business class which is beyond my budget. Thanks for the referral though.
canadamale Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 Going Vancouver, Canada to Manila I find Air China the usually the cheapest. Draw back being the 4 hour layover in Beijing and the 12:05 am arrival in Manila. There is a shower available (Beijing) for a small sum, also rooms but for 4 hours hardly worth it, at least for me. Also I find there planes crowded and the food not very good, thankfully I can enjoy a few Chinese beers.

And I heard the seat are small. I cannot do 10 or more hours like that. Not without more stress than I am willing to put up with. But thanks for the tip.
