Jollygoodfellow Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 How would this affect his visa status? Seems like a foolish thing to do? It seems that the country's intensified campaign against illegal drugs is sending chills down the spine of not only Filipinos but of expats in the country as well. In Cagayan de Oro City, a police station chief confirmed last Monday that a foreigner voluntary showed up during 'Oplan Tokhang' and confessed to being a drug dependent. Sr. Inspector Maricris Mulat, Station 1 commander in Plaza Divisoria, said she was a bit surprised seeing a foreigner heed the anti-illegal drug campaign. Mulat said the man was from Rome, Italy but had been residing in the city's Barangay 14 for quite sometime — along with a Filipina partner and a daughter. The Italian had confessed that he had been occasionally using illegal drugs but had decided to kick the habit for good, according to the station commander. Mulat then urged other Filipino drug dependents to stop their illegal activities and follow in the footsteps of the foreigner. http://cnnphilippines.com/regional/2016/07/21/Foreigner-CDO-surrenders-anti-drug-campaign.html

IMHO it depends on how much he pays to keep from getting blacklisted by the NBI. Oh wait, isn't there an anti-corruption campaign also going on? It's great they want to end illegal drug usage and seemingly help shabu addicts, other then executing them I don't see much (if any) help in getting them rehabilitated. A lot of talk with no infrastructure to back it up is what I see. He could wind up having a contract taken out him (and his family too) if his dealer thinks he'll talk to and co-operate with the police. Doubt he thought about that as well. So yes, likely a foolish thing to do on multiple levels. 5 hours ago, Jollygoodfellow said:
Hey Steve Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 My take is that if this guy gets blacklisted-any other foreigner shabu junkies in hiding will remain in hiding as they may be watching closely what happens in this case. I think the govt knows this about other foreigners coming forward and will not deport him. As far as dropping a dime on any dealers goes, he should remain silent for his own safety-given the fact he will likely have no police protection.
robert k Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 He takes illegal drugs, his decision making process may not be working properly.
RBM Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 The guy is stupid in multiple ways. First any help which is unlikely to come from officials gives him no benefit. He will be endangering his family. Finally if he wanted to stop he could find support among friends, no need to go public. Total stupidity as I see it.

If he's married to a Filipina he would not (imo) be deported. If it's a conjugal relationship it might be different. Or if his visa status was not updated, he might eventually be prevented from extending. Of course the underlying reason here is not known. But he's a young guy, no visible income? He might be a drug dealer who's using a back door way to avoid getting targeted, maybe killed. And that might not be true also, Filipino killing Filipino is one thing. Filipino killing citizens of other countries might put the Philippines in a compromised situation with their diplomatic ties, so they might avoid it.

JJReyes Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 Another possibility is the person has no funds and he wants to go home. It's a way to get a free ticket out of the Philippines.

IMHO (or not so humble) if it can be proven he broke the law in some fashion, he should be prosecuted, jailed and then deported to his home country.
