I suspect the present Government is not yet organised to react to worldwide media interest in what is happening here. They're only used to SE Asian interest over domestic policies. They expect wider international attention only when there's a natural disaster, conflict, revolution etc. Not their domestic policy being under the spotlight on worldwide and foreign domestic news broadcasts.

As the kid in the Corner would say "He Started it Sir"

I disagree because Duterte was an active young man during the Marcos regime and learned all about world opinion at that time.

If I were going to behave as a bull in a china shop I would get right to so later I could reap the benefit of mellowing and showing improvement!

Wel at least Mr. Dueterte is making reading interesting for uls and giving us interesting conversation.

The eyes of the world are on the Philippines. Duterte's street talk and profanity are making him and the people of the Philippines laughing stock. Instead of being diplomatic when he speaks to dignitaries, he insults them and calls them SOBs ( The Pope ) and homosexuals, ( US Ambassador ). A direct reflection on his upbringing. This is who the people elected to run their country. His enemies are laughing at him. I'm laughing at him. I can't wait to hear another speech from him. A real media hound and drama queen.

Interesting...so maybe the one sided Al Jazeera discussion was just because nobody was available? The BBC always say if they tried to invite someone but "no one was available". Or, maybe it's just that Al Jazeera isn't in the Premier League of international news channels?

The BBC had a short item. CNN had a reporter in Quezon City Jail, showing the prisoners all smiling and marching around. Eighty in a cell and sleeping on steps though.

But Al Jazeera had a long clip of the press conference and helpfully translated the profanities. Maybe that's why no one was available?

Trumpesque. But with 90 pc support at home, the other day, anyway. However, like Trump, abroad is another matter. I'm looking forward to his first overseas trip.

Not that I particularly follow everything everyone says but in general, not in total, I find Duterte and Trump way of speaking better than most. They may exaggerate or use colorful language to make a point but they seem to say what they mean. To have a conversation with them is know where they stand, very different than the PC politically correct BS most politicians spout, half of which is a lie and the other half hidden by diplomatic mumbo jumbo to the point you have no idea what they actually want.

If you were the current LTO head you wouldn't have understood what he meant for you last weekend:

http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/808309/duterte-fires-ex-presidents-men

With Trump: re Mexican immigration "I'm going to build a wall...."

re deportation of 11m undocumented immigrants  "You're going to have a deportation force...."

There's so many more. Just watch CNN.

Lately, he's rowed back so quickly from many of his proposals he would get the Gold medal if rowing backwards was in the Olympics!

However I would at least give Duterte some credit for starting to try to implement his election agenda. That is something to be welcomed for itself. If his peace initiatives get anywhere without giving away too much to communists and Muslims I will applaud him.

From what I understand, people are sick to the back of the teeth with the corruption there. Maybe s***canning a bunch of government lifers will send the right message to everyone else.

Oh I do think Duterte has substantially increased the profile of Philippines on the International stage.  But I doubt this will stop his campaign.

I think the professor has correctly read the feelings of the people.  But as Jack has said, he needs to look to other areas and look at the total picture of what needs to be done in Philippines - I would not like the job.
