Happyhorn52 Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 A fisherman in the Philippines has kept what might be the largest natural pearl ever found hidden in his home for more than 10 years. The enormous pearl is 30cm wide (1ft), 67cm long (2.2ft) and weighs 34kg (75lb). If it is confirmed to have formed within a giant clam, as has been reported, it would likely be valued in excess of US$100m https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/aug/24/fisherman-hands-in-giant-pearl-he-tossed-under-the-bed-10-years-ago
Gratefuled Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 What was it doing hiding? I saw a picture of it. It's ugly. No wonder it was hiding.
Happyhorn52 Posted August 24, 2016 Author Posted August 24, 2016 Not sure why it would be worth $100m unless some museum wants it because of the novelty. Either way he's one lucky fisherman.

Dave Hounddriver Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 From the story: Quote . . . His boat’s anchor caught on the giant clam and he had to swim down to dislodge it. . . And then . . . The enormous pearl is 30cm wide (1ft), 67cm long (2.2ft) and weighs 34kg (75lb) . . . I found that sounded fishy until I remembered watching some filipinos relocating 100 pound and larger rocks, by hand and with ropes, when building a sea wall. They would tie up the rocks and lift them until not quite out of the water and ferry them over to the spot they needed to be. So I think it is possible he really did lift a 34 kg pearl out of the water. Bet the clam was relieved. Perhaps he did not mention it until now as he was fishing in a sanctuary. Would not the shells of clams also be covered in pearl? I thought the really valuable pearl came from oysters?
Queenie O. Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 I wonder what will become of it? I was hoping that it was going to be round before I saw it. It seems that the Philippines is full of these unique records-- Smallest, Largest etc.
canadamale Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 I was reading of this in my morning paper here in Canada. I wonder if he will be regretting having said anything once he realizes how this is about to change his life?
