ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- The Philippine army special forces seized the "last stronghold" of the Abu Sayyaf militant group in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan, after one month of fighting, military officials said Tuesday.

"The hill is the ASG's last stronghold after the terrorists went on the run from the relentless military operation that started last July," Lt. Ron Villarosa, public affairs officer of the 4th Special Forces Battalion

This is very reminiscent of Nam. ARVN would "surround" a VC strong point on three sides. Shoot the heck out of the area. Wait until daylight then move into an empty encampment.

The article says very little other than the Filipino special forces "took over" some holes in the ground on a hill. There were no prisoners captured or enemy fighter KIA.

It is stated around 45 enemy KIA in the war since July.

I agree. It is sad. All that wasted effort.

Now, there is nothing wrong with letting them think there is a path to escape, with mortars pre registered (let them laugh about how terrible your aim is), and an AC 130 Spectre waiting in the wings 20 miles away.  But that isn't what happened.

He noted local government units helped operations by evacuating affected areas after a meeting with Mujiv Hataman, the governor of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Region.

He failed to mention that among those "evacuated" included members of Abu Saayaf.  Thanks Mayor of ARMM.

Killing 45 is a good start and sends a message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.

They are bandits and not freedom fighters and nothing to do with Islam. There should be a bounty for every one killed. Show evidence like a body.

And pay double bounty if he is a "drug dealing" bandit? :e3358:

Only if they kill them twice.

I don't think the Abu Saayaf is in to drugs. They prefer kidnapping for ransom. I may be wrong. I doubt that even the NPA is in to drugs. I may be wrong but I've not heard of Muslims using or dealing drugs. I know the NPA is not Muslim.
