Gratefuled Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 If you have noticed, there are bakeries everywhere. Sometimes 2 on the same block. Large bakeries in the malls. So, the people do like bread and pastry. So, I wonder why they do not serve nor offer bread in restaurants. I would love pan de sal with my food or even a sweet roll of some kind. Just another something I have gotten used to. I know, I know, rice is their bread so I guess there is no demand for bread.

Oh well, I don't eat out that often, anyway.
Tukaram (Tim) Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 I have wondered about all the bakeries. I see them everywhere yet almost never see anyone serving bread? We stop in them for merienda sometimes, but does not seem like it would be enough business to support them.

Nephi Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 I think it's like a lot of things here. They mimic what they see or might hear about but no real interest in deep research on most things. So they know french fries go with a burger but usually no idea about onions, pickles, and mustard on the burger. Also no clue about onion rings. My guess is it's the same with bread or dinner rolls served with a meal. Also, they would probably look at it as an added expense they would have to charge for or take a loss on. We probably could if the bread was of good quality and not this junk made with low grade flour and tons of sugar in it. Popular Post Queenie O. Posted September 7, 2016 Popular Post Posted September 7, 2016 I think that rice is a meal staple and bread is just a light snack to Filipinos. They wouldn't think to combine them in the same meal. Early in the morning an average Filipino might eat pan de sal or some sweet roll with a cup of coffee. An hour later, a "real" meal with rice and something else would be eaten for breakfast. I think from my observation that average Filipinos are the biggest rice lovers/eaters in the world. A top draw are the restaurants serving "bottomless" or unlimited rice with a meal. Bread for snacks at any time of the day now though, has contributed to many Filipinos' putting on extra weight.

My wife laughed when I told her that in the US many restaurants offer unlimited Coke. Of course I had just laughed at the unli rice!

Well Tim, I'm sure that Filipinos' would not be impressed with the unlimited coke--less room for rice!
