TheMason Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Planned Parenthood ranks fertility awareness methods (rhythm method) in the same group as the diaphragm, male or female condom, cervical cap, and sponge in terms of failure rates. All have a failure rate between 15-25%. The only methods with a worse ranking are withdrawal and spermicides. Aside from sterilization, the best methods are IUD or an implant with only a 2% failure rate. All the other methods require a degree of expertise and rely on people to use them properly. Any method that relies on people to implement it correctly will have a high failure rate. Its just as easy to forget a pill or not put a condom on correctly as it is to forget to track the days of your cycle. The rhythm method fails between 13-20% of the time, usually due to either poor tracking of the woman's cycle or an irregular cycle. Some women just can't use it because they don't have consistent cycles. This method requires diligence to track her cycle and both partners must have discipline on the unsafe days. For people that are willing to put in the effort and are opposed to using non-natural methods the rhythm method is a viable alternative. National birth rates have very little to do with the dominant religion of a country. If you look at national birth rates there is a strong correlation between the level of freedom women have and the birth rate. So, if you want to decrease birth rates, give women equal protection under the law, equal access to education, and empower them to live their lives without being dependent on men for their economic well being. When freed from the strictures of their biology, women tend to choose not to have children as often. The ironic part is that once women have this level of freedom, they tend to turn into the stereotypical Western woman that so many people whine about.I think this comes under the heading of be careful what you wish for because you might just get it.
