FIESTA WEEK Aghhhhhhhhhh!

Filipinos seem to like loud "fun" noises at night but they don't like noises that sound like someone is working.  I found that out last week at 8 pm when I was working outside with an electric saw.

Let me draw the picture:  I live in an area of row houses where many houses/families are side by side or just across a small street.  One neighbor likes to have street parties and he was out there with friends at 8 pm with loud music and booze and talking loudly.  He often rents a karaoke machine but not that night.  Out mutual neighbor came to ME to complain I was too noisy and I had to put the saw away because he was trying to sleep and I should do that in the daytime. I told him it was blazing hot outside in the daytime so the evening was a better time for me to do this.  He said, and I quote, "We are trying to sleep now! Do you understand?  You must stop working now! Do it tomorrow!"

Not wanting to cause too much trouble with the neighbors I agreed to put the power saw away and went to have some drinks and get loud with the other neighbors.  No one bothers them.  Filipinos like parties and loud music.

Well now we know what to do for some payback.Next month I will buy a power saw.Good on you Dave.

Excellent question Queenie!  I'm a bit perplexed also.  Perhaps it's the Filipino culture to show their bling-bling or one's upmanship?  Even some of the privately owned vehicles are full of decorative design, chrome and mirrors.  I can readily see that here when I go to church (once in a lifetime) and many of the Filipino Catholics have their bling-bling around their necks, drive expensive cars, big parties, big homes.  

Perhaps the label of American-western made or lifestyle brings them at the top of the heap of the crab mentality among the dirt poor?  

Good thoughts.  Well Jake,  the music seems to be coming from a sitio that happens to be quite poor. I was thinking that this particular guy might possibly be trying to impress a female neighbor or neighbors with his proud possession, that stereo/bass. Filipinos are musical people and love song and instruments, so maybe it's a carryover from that too. For young teens here in the province living a rather limited and mundane life I think that fiesta music is a way to dream about the  fancy nightlife and clubs/DJs from far flung places in their imagination and they get a taste of what they imagine they're missing, Here in the province I agree that there is a tendency to try to outdo also. Maybe loud music stimulates people out of the slumber of the heat.. It is a mystery at times Jake.

I never really thought about that Dave,  but you're right! The same rowdy folks who party and sing resent a nearby German man that uses his weed wacker in his yard sometimes during the day.

Reminiscent of the origins of Industrial Music in the 80's, whereby music was made using the sounds of industry like hammers on metal, screeching saws etc. Personified by bands such as Nitzer Ebb and Einstedande Neubaten and the Mutoid Waste Collective. Later the sound got more commercialised by the likes of Skinny Puppy and Nine Inch Nails.
