Jollygoodfellow Posted June 9, 2017 Posted June 9, 2017 Is this a good idea? Who will end up with the money? DUMAGUETE CITY -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development-Negros Island Region (DSWD-NIR) is giving out P100,000 each to 74 centenarians in Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental. This is the first time for the government under Republic Act 10868 to offer the incentive to honor the centenarians, said DSWD-NIR regional director Shalaine Marie Lucero in a press conference Wednesday afternoon, June 7. The DSWD-NIR identified 56 centenarian-beneficiaries in Negros Occidental and 18 in Negros Oriental, Lucero said. Their identities are being withheld for safety reasons, as the cash incentive will be directly handed out to them, Lucero added. The centenarians are in Binalbagan, Candoni, Cauayan, EB Magalona, Kabankalan, La Carlota, La Castellana, Sagay, Silay City, Sipalay City, Talisay City, Valladolid, and Bacolod in Negros Occidental; and in Canlaon City, Guihulngan City, Manjuyod, Sta. Catalina, Siaton, and Tayasan in Negros Oriental. Centenarians in Hinobaan, Bago City and La Castellana in Negros Occidental are also to receive the cash incentives but they are still under process for lack of requirements, Lucero said. The DSWD-NIR has already released 99 percent of the cash incentives to the centenarians in Negros Occidental as one of them died earlier. But Lucero said they are working for the possible post-mortem release of the cash incentive to the family of the deceased beneficiary. Together with the cash is a plaque of recognition for having reached the age of 100 or more, according to Lucero. The centenarians are of varying ages from 100 up the oldest living person on the island being 108 years old from Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental. For Negros Oriental, the DSWD-NIR already has the money and targets next week to deliver the money to the households of the centenarians. Four of the beneficiaries already died but Lucero assured that the cash incentives will still be given pending guidelines for post-mortem release. She assured that the centenarians have gone through a process of strict screening and verification plus the submission of documents, like membership of the Office of Senior Citizens’ Affairs, birth certificate of the beneficiary, birth certificate of a child or children and above, and affidavits of two disinterested persons, aged 80 and above, among others. The DSWD-NIR regional director said they have additional funds for more centenarians to be given the cash grant for 2017 but the agency will still be searching for deserving beneficiaries. Dave Hounddriver Posted June 9, 2017 Posted June 9, 2017 Waste of money. Why? They will just give it to their "needy" descendants. I've tried giving to old-timers here. Not that much but even small donations they do not spend on themselves. They will give it to the children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews who seem to need it most. Who are those? Usually the one with no job and no money but who still manage to sleep until noon and drink all night. Such was my experience when giving money to old-timers here. There has to be a better way.

If the government would put limits on discount purchases so seniors weren't already giving away p100,000 worth of discounts buying groceries for everyone. They could do the giveaway and still save the government money. (and we won't have to wait in line buying groceries waiting for Lola to buy more food than she can eat in a year every week.)

On the other hand, you gotta love how these folks all look after each other.

JJReyes Posted June 9, 2017 Posted June 9, 2017 Think of it as a tax rebate after years of paying taxes, assuming the centenarians paid taxes. It's okay if the money is given away to relatives. Better than having the relatives fight over it after the centenarians pass away.
Gerald Glatt Posted June 10, 2017 Posted June 10, 2017 @that age they have earned it. What they don't spend on beer and parties they can just waste.
