bows00 Posted September 12, 2017 Posted September 12, 2017 What attracts the expats to the Philippines? The Philippines, in general, is a step down from the comforts of our home country... especially if your accustomed to the life style of a typical US city. For examples...there is no need to worry about toilet paper in public stalls... the air in the city is regulated so you can breath normally in the streets... everywhere you go, the internet is easily accessible...well the list goes on and on... But what makes an expat decide, or even contemplate the idea of making it work in the Philippines? If your still pondering, just re-read the title of my thread. There is a reason why male expats out number the female expats by over 80%. It's all pretty obvious right? Any comments? 2

Then again I guess there are more men expats than Ladies as they (the Ladies) are sat at Home living in the Luxury they Took from us to make many want to be here Then again, for me, I was already married to a Filipina so why I would not want to live with her in her country? which I might add, is far cheaper and Safer than where I came from
Snowy79 Posted September 12, 2017 Posted September 12, 2017 I must admit the female situation played very little in my persuasion to move here. For me I was fed up with the changing attitudes back home. Too much division and people thinking the World owed them something. I can afford to live and I can safely say there's no pollution or cockerels and karaoke where I live.

There is a reason why male expats out number the female expats by over 80%. It's all pretty obvious right? Any comments? Oh yes, I have comments While your title may have merit, "The Huge Filipina Persuasion", I believe it is only what attracts some people here. It is not what keeps them here, (with the exception of guys who want to dip their wick into as many pots as they can.) Once a man has succumbed to the lure of a pretty girl, what keeps him here? You could take her with you to Thailand or Malaysia or Viet Nam or even take her back to the country you came from. So why do so many stay? My lifestyle here is not much different than it would be in a similar city in Canada. At my age, in a similar city in Canada, I would be going for coffee with fellow retirees as I do here. We would talk about the problems of the world, as I do here. After that I would go do whatever hobby takes my fancy, from golf to whist at the senior's hall. I do that here, but my hobbies are more varied due to the large number of retirees who are interested in meeting people and doing things together. I have never worried about toilet paper in public stalls because I bring my own in my back pocket. Have you ever seen some of the old outhouses up the Alaska Highway in Canada? I wish I had taken pics because what we have in Philippines is a step up. Air quality is fine if you stay away from polluted areas. I cannot understand why someone would live in a place where the air is too polluted when all they need to do is move a few miles. The air on the beach here is fresh and lovely, (disclaimer: except when you walk by something dead and rotting on the beach ). The Internet is easily available here. Many of us complain about the speed of it but we should not be so dependent on it that the speed of the Internet runs our lives. When it starts to get me frustrated I go for a walk. Much healthier. The bottom line, for me, is that I can do all this cheaper in Philippines than I can in Canada. There are good things about the countries we come from and good reasons why some move back, but there are also good things about the Philippines besides pretty filipinas. But I am glad that Philippines is not for every one. It is already overpopulated so its better if some people stay in those less crowded countries and enjoy the comforts of their own country. Take a filipina with you if you like . Have a good trip home 7

Popular Post davewe Posted September 12, 2017 Popular Post Posted September 12, 2017 It's been 6 weeks since I moved here and I know that while my reasons are not unique they are different than average. I married my Pinay wife 4 years ago so I did not come here for the women. One is enough (sometimes more than enough) for me. Many people assume we moved here because of my wife, but it's not true. While she's happy to be home and see her family more often, I was the motivator. I told my wife before we married that I would be retiring in a few years, would be moving abroad, and more than likely moving to the Philippines. We did consider a couple other options for about a hot second (Thailand for example) but in the end the only question was where to live in the Philippines. Now why would I come here when the Internet is faster in the US and I can get all the toilet paper my poor old loboot needs! 1. Stress: People say they move because of the money and I did too in a way, but the truth is I made good money and could have continued but for the stress of living in a society where pressure and excessive stress are considered normal. I came to hate it and couldn't wait to ditch work and the stress of the life I was leading. Some expats disrespect Filipinos, but I can't deny that they manage to live what is often a hard life with a smile on their face. 2. Work in old age: At 64 I was "the old guy". At a huge corporation in a division of nearly 1000, I was the oldest employee. Almost every other 60+ engineer had been downsized or offered packages to leave. Instead of the fantasy of being looked upon with the respect that I earned, I was viewed with just a bit of contempt, as in "when is he gonna get out of the way." For my part I smiled, made the best of it, did my job, collected my damn good paycheck, and left on my own terms. I retired May 1 and haven't thought of any of them since. I watched many people my age and older become invisible in my society and it scared me. I was ready to retire but not to hit the rocking chair and be ignored. I'm neither of those things in the Philippines. 3. Anger: Consistent with the stress is the anger in many of the Western countries. People routinely yell in stores. Road rage has become an epidemic. Regardless of who you supported the last election and its aftermath it's a great example of what's happening. People are furious and attack each other in the process. I just kept thinking, "six months and I'll be out of this hellhole." 4. Friendliness: It's an old cliche that Filipinos are friendly but let's not underestimate the power of that cliche. I love to walk and invariably someone (usually many) say "good morning" with a smile. I respond with "Maayang buntog," and its just possible, though I'm not sure, that I am smiling back. There's 100 other reasons I retired here (sun and sand come to mind) but you get the idea.
Popular Post expatuk2014 Posted September 12, 2017 Popular Post Posted September 12, 2017 I came to the Philippines to look at the scenery its everywhere Seriously being a a pensioner in the UK and not being a homeowner Was not something to look forward to . And i was fed up with having worked since the age of 15yrs and being regarded As a drain on the system by Students and others, and then seeing Asylum seekers Being given a bungalow to live in and enough money every month to buy 2 cars And live like Royalty. And me having my Pension reduced by having a forced company pension years ago. The Philippines may be regarded by many as a third world country but its far from it. Yes it has its little quirks us westerners have to get used to,toilet paper, eating with a spoon and fork Celebrating the death of a family member, and November 1st when everybody spends the day At the cemetaries to be with their departed loved ones. Little things i like such as when i go into a hardware store and ask for a certain item and About 4 staff members all go and look for it for me. And you walk into SM and as you walk around the store all the staff greet you. And then theres the tricycles and the jeepneys and pedicabs i love em ! The UK elf and safety guys would have a great time here ! But the main reason i came to the Philippines is the Filipina i married ! Because i love her and we are as one and the Philippines is our home seio

bows00 Posted September 13, 2017 Author Posted September 13, 2017 On the off-shoot of this topic, how does it affect your decision as you enter your late 50's or 60's? Maybe you reach an age where your drive to seek women fades (at least slightly) and you begin to look for other things in life to enjoy.
