GeoffH Posted December 7, 2017 Posted December 7, 2017 (edited) I don't know about 'typical' but we're paying to take the family (well the closer members anyway) to Gloria's Fantasyland amusement park as a 'family bonding' / 'christmas' celebration. We have 6 Samsung Tablets packed for the nieces & nephews. Citizen watches for the wife's parents, Clothes for her 7 siblings and there better halves, also a lot of chocolate and candy. We also shipped 6 boxes that should arrive in the next few days with everyday essentials for them. What part of the Philippines are you going to and how do I become part of your family? lol. Popular Post davewe Posted December 7, 2017 Popular Post Posted December 7, 2017 I think I've told this story here before - apologies if I did - just call it beginnings of dementia. Four years ago Janet and I were newlyweds and she was still new to living in the US. We talked about what we might want to do for Xmas for her family. There was no way I wanted to go to the trouble and expense of sending gifts so I proposed sending the princely sum of $100. I actually made the "mistake" of asking the forum for your options on this. Let's just say that in the end I chose to ignore those opinions and sent the $100; at the very least it made the wife happy. I did not want to know nor care how the money was used. As far as I was concerned compared to normal Christmases in the US, it was chump change. Some of the comments I received here were that the amount would only increase and in a sense that became true. The next year Janet asked if I would consider sending $100 again. "Sure, it worked out last year so why not." Since by then she was working, she proposed that she too would send $100 - so now we were up to $200. No problem - I'm still shelling out the same tiny amount - and I don't know or care what they are doing with it: gifts, bills, booze - who cares? Everyone's happy. Last year we were in Alcoy for our last trip before actually moving here. A neighbor came up to Janet and me and thanked us. Why? Because for the past few years Janet's mom has been hosting a Xmas dinner for the barangay, announcing to everyone that it was sponsored by Dave and Janet. That's what they did with some or most of the cash we sent. So for me they deserve a good Xmas. And since it continues to cost us chump change, I have no problems. 5

Considering the number of stories told here we all seem pretty happy to bitch when things don't turn out well. By nature we are all risk takers. Sometimes the risk turns out and sometimes it doesn't; either way it makes a good story.

Jollygoodfellow Posted December 7, 2017 Posted December 7, 2017 I'm going to buy a bucket of 6 bottles of beer (299 peso) from over the road for Joy. I know she wont drink it but I also know it wont go to waste. It's the thought that counts right. 1

Being this is the Philippines I hope you went heavy on the chocolates as they seem to LOVE western chocolate - possibly more than anything!!! 1
