Not sure about lack of evidence as according to a news story they found images on computers and some "victims" made statements. Im sure the judge would have looked at the evidence presented otherwise there is no case. 2

What I am sure of is being approached by a PNP member some years back who said (In an unrelated matter but you will get the point): "We are sure we have the person who broke into your house but we do not have enough evidence to convict. If you can help us by giving a sworn statement that you saw him break in that would help us to put him away." Me: "But I did not see it". Cop: "It doesn't matter, we know we have the right guy so now we just need some evidence." I refused to help and moved away and said I did not care if they locked the guy up but "Lack of evidence" has become a joke with me since then.

No one has said he was wrongly locked up, no family or friends jumping up and down in the media while he sat waiting for a trial. Even if there was no minors involved any sort of sex trade, acts is against the law so if you take the gamble its one's own decision. If he had a large number of girls supposedly doing accounting work then it could have been proven by records or business proof but again I believe just another cover story to cover himself at the time. Anyway a life term is 30 years in the Philippines so he only has 85 years to go. On another aspect I have not seen anything said as to why the co accused only got one life sentence for her role ? There are many bar owners in various Philippine cities who are equally guilty of something. Heck, there are filipina mamasan ladies on the streets of Colon who have done similar to what this man did and are still doing it today. This man was tried and convicted because he did not keep a low profile. To me that's the whole story. Others will draw their own conclusions. So by that do you mean he was caught because be became noticed by law enforcement or was he caught because they couldn't ignore it anymore due to his higher profile. One would hope the first and not the latter, but in PH nothing surprises me.

David Q Posted May 14, 2018 Posted May 14, 2018 On 2/21/2018 at 9:09 PM, Dave Hounddriver said: But the point of the thread is: Keep a low profile and don't even LOOK like you are doing anything wrong as it does not take much to convict a foreigner here. It's very complicated. I thought I was absolutely fine when a young girl I met in Cebu asked me to take her on vacation. She did not have an ID. But she swore up and down that she was 18 and was a senior in HS which seemed about right. Very pretty, but also very proper and seemingly very smart. She had apparently never had a boyfriend or even kissed a boy before, which seemed a little odd but no big. I went to meet her parents, and make sure it was okay with them. Not a particularly poor family -- pretty much middle class. Anyway, the parents and siblings were absolutely great and we rented a motorcycle and took off for three days. Had a great time but did get some funny looks. She is an exceptionally small girl -- 4'-9" and 33kg -- so perhaps something looked odd. I'm three times her age and three times her weight, and much much taller. But I really didn't pay much attention because I had it set in my mind that she was 18 and just kind of forgot about it. We stayed at a little resort that is owned by a cool French guy; I've stayed there before so they know me and it's all good. Taught her how to swim, and had some great laughs and overall an excellent date. Then I drove her home afterward. I spent a couple hours with the family. One of them said something to her like, "so what will we get you next year for your 18th birthday?" Then I realized with horror that the girl was only 17 and indeed had 2/3 of a year to go before reaching 18. She then admitted as much. I politely got out of there as soon as I could. That was very scary. I guess the girl, her parents, and her siblings had no idea that she was supposed to be 18. They weren't trying to extort me or anything; I think they just didn't know. But what if someone had called the police??????? Sad, because she was very pretty and indeed much much smarter and level-headed than other filipinas I've met. Awfully young, but would have been a real keeper

They know, but they brush it off. You were fortunate that they were not trying to extort you. It happens. It also happens that nosy neighbors report people who are dating 17 year olds. There are a lot of older men dating "almost 18" year old girls. Its illegal (except for Muslims) so we don't condone it on this forum, but I do not judge it personally. Some of my very close friends started off that way and have now been married many, many years to that girl. But things were different a decade ago. Now it is not only illegal but it is more enthusiastically enforced. Edited May 15, 2018 by Dave Hounddriver
