stevewool Posted April 3, 2018 Posted April 3, 2018 I have looked on here for the said Health insurance and its a mine field if you look online , so the question is can i afford it and yes if i do fall ill it will be the best thing ever. I have been looking and the cost is just to much to pay each month out of my budget for the just in case, paying around £300 or 21,000 peso each month is a lot, is there a cheaper way , we will have savings plus we also have the credit cards. Could anyone point me in the right direction for other companies or is that the going rates for expats.

sonjack2847 Posted April 3, 2018 Posted April 3, 2018 A lot of expats take out Philhealth and use their savings to cover the extra charges. Paying charges to a company with more smallprint than needles in a haystack is not on the menu for many people with all the exclusions they come up with.
Popular Post Dave Hounddriver Posted April 4, 2018 Popular Post Posted April 4, 2018 (edited) Cash is king. I recently lost one of many friends who was rich by local standards. He has passed on so I see no harm in giving a very rough idea of what I am talking about . . . a 10M peso house in Philippines . . . 10M pesos in an American stock market . . . a great pension and fantastic health insurance. Now here is the BUT. But he died in Chong Hua with little to no cash and his relatives had started a GoFundMe plea to help with the medical bills. His fantastic insurance (and believe me it is great) would only pay back AFTER he had paid and the treatment he needed was in the million pesos range. He did not have that kind of cash on hand. He was not well enough to contact his stock broker and arrange to sell and get the cash to the hospital. He had given no-one the power of attorney to do that for him. I self insure. I have been criticized for that but there is no way I would ever expect to be in this man's situation as I have a close relationship with certain family members who also have power of attorney over my accounts. The point of this is: IF you want health care that is worth anything then decide where you will live, go to the financial administrator of the hospital you will use, ask which insurance companies they work with and ask which ones the hospital will accept without any advance payment. Each hospital and city will vary. Or just end up like my friend, who never saw this coming and was constantly giving me advice on how financially smart he was EDIT: This friend arrived in Philippines in 2007, so I have known him for 10 years. Time in Philippines means nothing to a person who stops learning. Edited April 4, 2018 by Dave Hounddriver 7
